    • An apparatus for thermal treatment of the prostate has a liquid cooled urethral catheter (2), within which a microwave emitter (4)is disposed for heating a region around the prostatic urethra and a rectal probe for sensing the temperature in rectum, the catheter and the probe each comprising at least one temperature sensor (12, 16). Each temperature sensor includes a glass fibre having at one end a luminiscent member. The temperature sensor comprised in the catheter is removably disposed at the outer surface of the catheter, said one end being positioned in the region to be treated by heat during the heat treatment of a patient. The luminiscent member is an aluminium-gallium-arsenide stack, which, when illuminated, emits light having a frequency, which is dependent on the temperature of said member.

    • A probe for a microwave apparatus for clinical and surgical treatment of tissue in vivo, especially intra-uterine treatment of the endometrium by means of hyperthermia, is supplied with microwave energy from a microwave generator provided in the microwave apparatus via a coaxial cable. The coaxial cable is terminated in such a manner that it acts as a microwave radiator (A) in the form of an exposed section of the end of the inner conductor of the coaxial cable (4) and a ground plane (GP) provided behind the exposed section (A) of the inner conductor. The ground plane (GP) thereby constitutes the transition between the microwave radiator (A) and the coaxial cable (4), the length of the ground plane (GP) being greater than the length of the microwave radiator (A). This means that the probe acquires an approximately isotropic, symmetrical radiation characteristic without backwardly-directed radiation lobes, which in turn means that its positioning in the uterus is not critical and eliminates the risk of damage to tissue which is not intended for treatment. This makes the probe especially suitable for sterilization of women under primitive conditions.

    • Prior art catheters fail to allow for both the transportation of fluids and the sensing and monitoring of body functions. New catheters are desired to perform these functions while preserving the flexibility and strength and characteristics of the prior art catheters. The disclosed catheter eliminates this problem by proposing a body implantable intravascular lead with a first layer of plastic (11) defining a tube having a precision lumen therein and at least one electrical conductor (30) wrapped helically along the length of one or more plastic layers. The conductors are substantially parallel along the axis at each end for ease of connection to electrodes. The pitch of the helical wrap of the conductors may vary throughout the length so as to create regions of greater strength or flexibility. The conductive wires (30) are overlaid with one or more layers of plastic (39) separately insulating the wires from each other.
