    • A carpet extractor includes a base assembly (A) with a two part base housing (10). Upper (22) and lower portions (24,528) of the base housing define a socket (100), for receiving a cleaning fluid recovery tank (120,552), and a chamber (50), rearward of the socket, for receiving a suction fan (82,540) and associated motor (80,542). The chamber includes front (78,544) and rear compartments (546,76) for receiving the suction fan and motor, respectively. The lower portion (22,528) of the base housing defines a first pocket or indentation (70,550) for receiving a motor (68,548) for driving a rotating brushroll (60) and a second pocket (532) for receiving a solution supply pump (520) which selectively supplies pressurized cleaning fluid to a spray bar (526) and a remote distributor (614). The pocket and indentation are positioned rearward of the socket, and generally beneath a forward end of the chamber. The location of the fan, fan motor, pump, and brushroll motor behind the recovery tank socket provides for the accommodation of a large capacity recovery tank, while maintaining a low-profile base assembly.

    • A portable surface cleaning apparatus including a base module for movement along a surface, an upright handle pivotally attached to the base module, a liquid dispensing system including a flexible bladder defining a fluid supply chamber for holding a supply of cleaning fluid, a fluid recovery system including a tank on the base module having a chamber for holding recovered fluid and housing the flexible bladder, and a passageway between the fluid supply chamber and the recovery chamber, whereby the recovery chamber is in communication with the fluid supply chamber and the pressure in the flexible bladder is equalized with the pressure in the tank as the cleaning fluid is dispensed from the supply chamber and the dirty liquid is collected in the recovery chamber. In a further embodiment the tank has an outlet opening in a bottom portion thereof and a drain plug is removably mounted in the outlet opening. In another embodiment a lid mounted on the tank defines an expansion chamber having an inlet opening, an outlet passage, and first and second diverters against which the working air flow reverses direction twice between the inlet opening of the expansion chamber and the tank. In another embodiment the working air conduit includes a manual actuator knob having an over-center linkage mechanism connected to a conversion valve for movement between first and second positions, thereby selectively moving the conversion valve between open and closed positions, whereby fluid communication between the tank and the suction nozzle is selectively opened and closed.

    • A wet dry cannister vacuum having an upper and lower chamber separated by an intermediate wall. A blower (1) in the upper chamber providing a low and high pressure head communicating with respectively with low and high pressure compartments. A valve (2) opening from the low pressure compartment through the intermediate wall to the lower chamber. Another valve (8) opening from the high pressure compartment through the intermediate wall into the lower chamber. A water reservoir in the bottom of the lower chamber. A duct (15) opens on one end near the bottom of the lower chamber and on the other end to ambient air pressure. In operation, before wet or loose dry material is vacuumed, a small amount of water is introduced into the lower chamber by length of flexible hose being attached to the duct (15) and to a water source on the other. After priming, an attachment for cleaning may be attached to the hose, such as a shampoo wand (25). When refuse water accumulates in the reservoir to a certain level, a float (13) rises to shut off the blower automatically when a predetermined amount has been accumulated. To empty the reservoir, the space above the reservoir in the lower chamber is connected to the high pressure head by reversing the valving in the upper chamber. The duct (15) becomes an discharge pipe pumping out the refuse water to a drain after removing the attachment on the hose.

    • A pump has a housing defining a pump chamber and having a shaft opening. An impeller shaft extends through the shaft opening and is sized to define a gap between the impeller shaft and the shaft opening. An impeller is attached to the shaft inside the pump chamber. The impeller includes a first set of impeller blades for transporting fluid through the pump chamber and a second set of impeller blades for creating a pressure force which pushes fluid away from the shaft opening. The pump with sealless shaft prevents fluid from leaking through the gap, and therefore is particularly suited for use in a tank-type vacuum cleaner capable of collecting both dry material and fluid. The gap is used in such an application to prime the pump, thereby discharging fluid collected in the tank.

    • A hand-held portable wet/dry vacuum comprising a cleaning fluid tank, a motor housing and a dirty fluid tank. The cleaning fluid tank is selectively mounted on the motor housing. A siphon, which is controlled by an actuator, is located in the cleaning fluid tank. The dirty fluid tank is selectively mounted on the motor housing in spaced relation to the cleaning fluid tank. The motor housing houses an air driven turbine and a suction fan and motor assembly. A suction nozzle is located at a first end of the wet/dry vacuum. An air passageway extends from the suction nozzle to the suction fan and motor. The turbine communicates with the air passageway. The housing further comprises at least one air inlet to allow air to pass to the turbine. A brush is operably connected to the turbine via a gear train. A rotational axis of the brush is angled so that a portion of the brush contacts a surface to be cleaned. At least one air inlet is found in a wall of the motor housing for allowing cooling air into the motor housing. A valve is located in the air passageway and switches airflow between the turbine and the suction nozzle. Alternatively, an electric motor is used in lieu of the turbine to power the brush.
