    • 303,508. Woods, (nÚe Morgan), J. E. Jan. 6, 1928, [Convention date]. Floors, cleaning, waxing, and polishing. - A machine for polishing, waxing, or similarly treating floors comprises brushes or other polishing elements rotated in opposite directions by a motor, liquid finishing-material being supplied from a reservoir through channels leading to the elements, and oscillatable means engaged intermittently by means movable with the shafts of the brushes or other elements whereby the liquid is positively ejected from the machine. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 3, two annular brushes 41 are detachably secured to shafts 27 which are rotated, through worm gearing, by an electric motor. The shafts 27 are mounted in a frame which is provided with two vertical chambers 67 communicating by apertures 65 with a reservoir 56 containing waxing or other surfacetreating liquid. The reservoir is provided with an electric heating element 63 and a thermostat 64 for regulating the temperature of the liquid. Within each chamber 67 there projects a rod 72 provided at the bottom with an enlarged head 78 and at the top with a cam surface 76. A member 45 carried by the shaft 27 is provided with a cam surface 47 whereby on rotation of the shaft the cam surfaces 76, 47 are engaged so that the rod 72 is pressed downwardly against the action of a spring 75 and liquid in the chamber 67 is forced out through an aperture 70. The flow of liquid may be reduced or stopped by means of a set screw 82 adapted to engage the top of the earn surface 76. In a modification, the oscillatable rod is normally held downwards by a spring, and is given reciprocating movement by the engagement of a pointed end on the bottom of the rod with a cam surface on a member secured to the brush element. The brush may be connected to the shaft 27 through the medium of a plate 120, Fig. 13, secured to the upper surface of the brush stock, the plate being provided with an internally-threaded flange 122 and with a spring 126 adapted to bear against the base of the shaft 27. A shoulder 123 on the flange bears against a pin on the shaft when the flange has been screwed home. The pin and shoulder may be dispensed with, by the formation of a shouldered recess in the base of the shaft 27 for engagement with the end of the spring 126. The brush may be replaced by a polishing element shown in Fig. 15. A plate 135 adapted for attachment to the driving shaft is provided with an annular felt pad 139 to which is attached by a screw 141 a disc 140 of cloth or other flexible material. The upper surface of the disc has an annular sheet of sandpaper 142 engaging the, felt 139, and to the lower surface is secured a sheet 143 of polishing material.
