摘要： A cigarette is formed by extruding a plurality of strands 32 through orifices 24 in a nozzle 22. The mixture which is extruded comprises tobacco and binder in a wet blend and the conditions of extrusion are such that the water evaporates and effects expansion of the mixture as it leaves the nozzle. The extruded strands are twisted together so that they adhere to each other to form a cylindrical mass with passages extending generally longitudinally through the mass. The mixture to be extruded can also contain fillers, other foaming agents, a polyfunctional acid such as citric or phosphoric acid, and alcohol. In a preferred method the binder is mixed with water before mixing it with the other components of the mixture.

摘要： An improved method of making reconstituted tobacco using a dry-forming process. Fiberized tobacco stems and scrap are combined with tobacco material of a fine particle size. The resulting tobacco mixture is conveyed in an airstream and deposited on a moving foraminous surface. An adhesive is incorporated into or applied to the web bonding the tobacco particles into a coherent sheet, and the sheet is dried if necessary. The dried sheet may be divided into leaflets or shredded for further processing as reconstituted tobacco. In preferred embodiments, cellulose fibers are mixed with the tobacco particles prior to web formation to impart increased sheet strength. In a further embodiment tobacco fines are mixed with the adhesive and applied to the web in the adhesive composition. Results obtained by means of the present invention include cost savings particularly in terms , of reduced capital costs. Because the tobacco is used substantially in its natural state, the aroma and other desirable tobacco attributes are retained.

摘要： A wet blend containing tobacco particles and a binder is extruded under conditions such that steam is generated within the material upon extrusion and effects foaming. To minimize the amount of water used, which may subsequently have to be dried off, the binder is pre-hydrated by mixing with water before being mixed with the tobacco particles. To improve the consistency of the hydrated binder a small proportion of tobacco particles can be mixed with the binder before hydration or part of the binder can be mixed dry with the tobacco particles, leaving an excess of water for admixture with the rest of the binder.

摘要： Waste or other recovered fibrous material, for example fibres from waste or reject cigarette filters, filter rods and tows employed in making them, is converted into useful products by depositing the fibres 11, preferably dispersed in an aqueous medium 12, on an advancing screen 16 to form a fibrous web. The web is caused to adhere to a carrier or backing sheet 14, either during or after deposition, and the assembly 20 of fibres and carrier is sub-divided into portions for the manufacture of fibrous products, preferably after being dried in a ventilated drier 21. Plasticizer may be applied by an applicator 22 for the purposes of softening and bonding the fibres in subsequent stages of the production of the desired fibrous products. The divided portions of the assembly 20 can be used to form such products as cigarette filters or absorbent ink carrier elements for pens.

摘要： A method and apparatus are disclosed for shredding reconstituted and blended leaf sheets, wherein the sheet (14) is first slit longitudinally (at 18), and then cut off transversely by bringing the points (62) of a serrated blade (60) into contact with the slit sheet at an angle to penetrate the sheet, and then moving the blade to tear off the portion of the sheet between the point of penetration and the end of the sheet. This produces much more uniform shreds, with less dust and shattering, than has hitherto been possible.
