摘要： A drying machine comprises a rotor (10) which has a steam pipe (11), a temperature detector (19), a steam valve (18) and a control device (20) for operating valve (18). At the start of control, valve (18) is opened until either the temperature in the rotor (10) has been raised by more than a preset amount DT 1 or the temperature gradient G exceeds a preset value and then closed for at least a preset time. After the end of the preset time, the valve (18) is opened for a period if the temperature gradient falls below a preset value g 2 with the temperature below a target range. This period is calculated in accordance with the difference between the temperature and a target temperature T R . The valve is closed at the end of this period for at least a preset period. The valve is also closed during this period if the temperature enters the target range or the gradient exceeds g 2 . Subsequently, the I valve (18) is opened for a further period each time the gradient falls below a preset negative value g 3 with the temperature below T R . This further period is also calculated in accordance whith the difference between the actual temperature and T R . The valve (18) is closed during this further period if either the temperature rises above T R or the gradient exceeds g 3 .

The process comprises the steps of determining a temperature preset value to provide an optimum drying temperature at each section upon basis of the flow rate characteristics at the section, an operated value based upon the measure values of the flow rate and the moisture rate of the cut tobacco leaves and a given value preliminarily preset for the section; controlling the heating means in accordance with the preset value; and feedback controlling at least the last one of the heating means based upon the measured value of the moisture rate of the dried tobacco leaves discharged from the rotor. The preliminarily preset given value is a value for providing a final target value at each section of the rotor with a temperature gradient which is increased from the entrance to the exit of the rotor.

The apparatus thoroughly and evenly dries and cools the tobacco consistently through the entire tobacco bed as it passes through the dryer (38) and cooler (32). The apparatus utilizes a plurality of individually controlled fluidized bed heating zones (22-30) for drying the tobacco. An additional fluidized bed cooling zone (32) is provided to cool the tobacco prior to reordering. A continuous conveyer (14) extends through the heating zones and cooling zones. A steam tunnel (40) is utilized to raise the moisture content of the dried tobacco to preselected moisture levels. A vibrating conveyer (60) moves the tobacco through the steam tunnel.
