    • A system for dispensing a fluid from a first tank (9) into a second tank (11), in which one of the tanks is attached to a vehicle (13). The system comprises a flexible, stretchable, resilient delivery hose (5, 51, 153, 253), a first end of the delivery hose being connected to the first tank (9) and a second end of the delivery hose being attached to a nozzle (7) adapted to dispense the fluid into the second tank. A flexible tension element (81, 83, 781, 883, 983) is provided between first and second fittings (29, 31, 61, 161, 261, 961) on the hose, the fittings being separated by at least two meters (six feet), the tension element substantially eliminating stretching of the delivery hose between the fittings. The tension element substantially reduces damage to the hose and to surrounding persons and objects when the hose is pulled and released as in a drive-away from a gasoline dispenser.

    • A breakaway assembly (100) for use in combination with a fuel dispenser apparatus is disposed between a segment of a hose (12) attached to a fuel dispenser unit (10) and a second segment of the hose (12) terminating in a nozzle (106). The breakaway assembly (100) has body portions with a first assembled condition and a second condition in which the body portions are separated. A fuel valve (128, 130) located in each of the body portions permits flow of fuel when the body parts are assembled and prevents flow upon separation. An element securing the body portions together releases engagement upon application of tension force to the hose (12), across the breakaway assembly (100), above a maximum level. In a preferred embodiment, the hose (12) is coaxial and a vapor valve (144) is also disposed within the breakaway assembly (100).

    • A breakaway pipe coupling which, in use, is located in the pipeline extending between a movable tanker, such as a sea vessel, and a storage tank. The purpose of the coupling is to provide a weakness in the pipeline so that a pull be exerted on the pipeline which exceeds a predetermined value, the coupling will break and quickly close off the pipeline to prevent spillage.
      The coupling includes a main body portion (31) and a breakaway portion (20), valve means (60) in the main body for closing the conduit (14) passing through the coupling, actuation means (70) being provided for operating the valve means to close the conduit (14) on removal of the breakaway portion from the main body portion and dampening means (76, 80) for controlling the rate at which the valve means closes the conduit.
