    • In an adaptive matched filter with a decision feedback equalizer (DFE), a tap-weight controller of the matched filter includes a tapped delay line having a series of delay elements for receiving an incoming digital signal to produce successively delayed signals at successive taps of the delay line so that the signal at the center tap coincides with an output of the DFE. Cross-correlators are associated respectively with tap-weight multipliers of the matched filter. In each cross-correlator, cross-correlation is detected between a digital sample from the DFE and a delayed version of the corresponding digital sample. An average value is taken of the cross-correlation to produce higher significant bits of a tap-weight coefficient for the corresponding tap-weight multiplier. The most significant bit of the output of the higher significant bits is inverted and a group of bits is produced, each having the same binary value as the inverted most significant bit. The group of bits is supplied to the corresponding tap-weight multiplier as lower significant bits of the tap-weight coefficient.

    • A method and apparatus for signal acquisition in an OFDM receiver relies on a preamble training sequence to synchronize the receiver in time (e.g. determining the start of a frame) and in frequency (carrier frequency offset compensation). The preamble training sequence has a periodic structure and the method and apparatus perform a cross-correlation technique using a matched filter to achieve time synchronization and/or frequency synchronization and/or channel estimation, the latter being especially useful in multi-antenna receivers for diversity combining purposes. Many advantages derive from performing at least two and preferably all three operations jointly, in terms of latency, hardware complexity, and length of training sequence required to achieve satisfactory convergence on all counts. The periodicity of the training sequence is exploited to reduce considerably the main filter complexity and optionally dynamically adjust carrier offset compensation throughout the filtering process.

    • A multiple access, spread-spectrum communication system processes a plurality of information signals received by a radio carrier station over telecommunication lines for simultaneous transmission over a radio frequency channel as a code-division-multiplexed signal to a group of subscriber units. The radio carrier station receives a call request signal that corresponds to a telecommunication line information signal, and a user identification signal that identifies a user to receive the call. The radio carrier station includes a plurality of CDMA modems, one of which provides a global pilot code signal. The modems provide message code signals synchronized to the global pilot signal. Each modem combines an information signal with a message code signal to provide a code division multiplexed signal. The RCS includes a system channel controller is coupled to receive a remote call. A radio frequency transmitter is connected to all of the modems to combine the code division multiplexed processed signals with the global pilot code signal to generate a code division multiplexed signal. The transmitter also modulates a carrier signal with the code division multiplexed signal and transmits the modulated carrier signal through a radio frequency communication channel to the subscriber units. Each subscriber unit includes a CDMA modem which is also synchronized to the global pilot signal. The CDMA modem despreads the code division multiplexed signal and provides a despread information signal to the user. The system includes a closed loop power control system for maintaining a minimum system transmit power level for the radio carrier station and the subscriber units, and system capacity management for maintaining a maximum number of active subscriber units for improved system performance.

    • Fully adaptive modem receiver for data-transmission systems which use trellis-coded modulation (TCM) and comprises an adaptive whitened-matched filter (WMF) and a reduced-state trellis decoder. The WMF consists of an adaptive linear equalizer with fractional-T spaced coefficients, and an adaptive linear predictor. The decoder combines the functions of equalization and TCM decoding. It employs combined intersymbol interference (ISI) and code states which exploit the set-partitioning structure of the underlying TCM code to provide full or reduced-state information about past ISI terms. The decoder branch metric cancels those ISI terms that are not, or are only partially, represented by the trellis states.
