    • A variable speed drive for an AC motor has features to reduce the speed of the motor if excess temperature is encountered in the variable speed drive system. The system has a rectifier that converts AC supply voltage into DC voltage on the positive and negative rails. Frequency switches switch the DC voltage to power conductors in a sequence and at a rate to determine the selected frequency. The frequency switches are controlled by a DC demand voltage. A temperature sensor provides an electrical response corresponding to the temperature in the system. The temperature response is compared to a reference voltage, and if it exceeds the reference voltage, the comparator provides an output that draws down the demand voltage by a value corresponding to the difference. Lowering the demand voltage lowers the speed of the motor to allow the system to cool under reduced load conditions.

    • A system for protecting the starter of an internal combustion engine from overheating as a result of cranking for an excessive period of time when the engine is difficult to start. Override circuitry is electrically interposed between a manually operable starter switch and the engine starter to apply a prescribed ON and OFF cranking sequence to the starter and thereby limit the duty cycle even though the operator continuously operates the switch. Preferably, the overall maximum duration of the start attempt (the duration of the ON and OFF cranking sequence) is limited by termination circuitry. The ON and OFF cranking intervals and, optionally, the overall maximum duration of the start attempt are particularly selected so as to allow sufficient time for motor winding heat to dissipate into the starter housing. This limited cranking duty cycle protects the starter from overheating. Also, when employed in combination with a thermostatic switch mounted on the starter housing and arranged to prevent starter energization when a predetermined temperature is reached, the limited starter ON time and intermediate resting periods permit the housing and the thermostatic switch to more closely follow winding temperature. As a further aspect, in order to maintain optimum operation of the protection system as starter load conditions vary, starter current is sensed and the starter ON/OFF duty cycle is appropriately modified in response.

    • A drive control device for an opening/closing member may be advantageously utilized in vehicular power window systems and the like. The drive control device is active to detect occurrence of pinching of an object obstructing the path of motion of the opening/closing member and, upon detection of such pinching during closing operation is controlled so as to move in the opening direction for a predetermined distance for preventing serious pinching from being applied to, for example, a persons hand or arm which may be blocking a power window while being closed by a vehicle driver. The drive control device further includes timing functions such that closing operation may not be immediately resumed after pinch detection, until a predetermined time period has elapsed. The pinch detection operation is effective to compensate for overrun of the opening/closing member caused by a lag between the time a closing control signal is stopped and the acutal motion of the opening/closing member finally and completely stops.

    • A motor control device controls a motor driving mechanism which drives a motor according to a motor drive signal for providing a normal drive signal and a locked condition signal. When the motor becomes overloaded while being driven by the motor driving mechanism according to the motor drive signal, the motor driving mechanism is controlled by controlling circuitry which inhibits the motor drive signal from being supplied to the motor driving mechanism. The controlling circuitry, while the motor is in the overloaded state, controls the motor driving mechanism so that power is supplied intermittently to the motor, or so that the supply of power for the regular and reverse rotation is given alternately. The controlling circuitry, when the load of the motor becomes normal, allows driving of the motor according to the motor drive signal.
