    • PURPOSE:To improve color purity to reduce a color spread over the display panel and improve resolution, by forming plural discharge circuits partitioned into several layers inside a luminous source tube, coating different luminous color of phosphors over at least one surface of each layer, and sealing a discharge gas in a airtight space. CONSTITUTION:Discharge circuits 3a, 3b, and 3c of three layers are formed with two partition plates 2a and 2b. Anodes 4a, 4b and 4c are arranged on the side plate 1d, and a cathode 5 at the end of the bottom glass plate 1b. Phosphors 6a, 6b, and 6c are of different luminous colors. In this system, ultraviolet ray generated from the discharge from the cathode 5 to the anode 4a also radiates phosphors 6b and 6c which have been spread over the circuits 3b and 3c. However, while this radiation reaches the display side (the glass plate 1a), the radiation of the phosphor 6b must pass through the partition plate 2a and two layers of the phosphor 6a, and the radiation of the phosphor 6b must pass through the partition plate 2b, two layers of the phosphor 6b, the partition plate 2a, and two layers of the phosphor 6a. Therefore, penetration and absorption occur to weaken the radiation, reducing the effect to the irradiation of the phosphor 6a.
