    • A pickup arm assembly for gramophone disc records comprises a pickup arm (6) pivotally mounted to a driven arm (8) movable about an axis substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the record disc (A). The pickup arm pivot (7) carries a target (11) which coacts with a position sensor (12) mounted on the driven arm (8) to sense changes in the angle subtended between the pickup arm (6) and the driven arm (8). The position sensor (12) provides a signal corresponding to any deviation of the angle from a desired predetermined angle to operate drive means (9) for the driven arm (8) to thereby move the arm in a direction to reduce such deviation. The relationship of the position sensor (12) to the driven arm (8) may be varied in accordance with variations in the position of the driven arm (8) to reduce or illuminate tracking errors.

    • An improved phonograph tone arm device (33) in which the pickup, including the stylus, is supported on a low friction air-bearing support (25) which provides for essentially frictionless movement of the tone arm (33) and pickup (34) both in horizontal linear travel and vertical pivoting to assure proper stylus pressure. The tone arm support system includes a support member (25) having an upper surface (29) which is shaped as a right circular through or cylinder section and a floating member (30) which has a juxtaposed matching convex or concave lower surface. A recess (31) in the lower surface of the floating member forms a plenum to which air is supplied from one or more openings (28) in the support member. The length of the plenum is such that the supply openings are always beneath the plenum confines during the full traverse of the stylus across a record to be played to minimize the amount of air required and maximize uniformity of support for the floating member. Alternate embodiments allow either the upper or lower surface of the record to be played.

    • PURPOSE:To horizontally drive a pickup through side pressure due to sound grooves activated to stylus, by driving a guide shaft of the pickup and making the friction between the guide shaft and the pickup as rolling friction. CONSTITUTION:At playing, a belt 20 is belted on a pulley 8a fixed to a rotating shaft of a motor 8, pulley 17, pulley 19 fixed at one end of a guide shaft passing through a fixed plate 3a. Thus, the guide shaft 4 is driven and a dynamic friction smaller in friction value is always operated with a cartridge holding stand 6, and the horizontal drive of the cartridge 5 can be made with very small driving force. Thus, tracking operation can be made only with the side pressure of sound grooves of a record disc.
