    • An electric violin comprises a head, a body and a bowstring module; the head is attached to the body via a connecting rod. The head includes a display screen and several string-buttons mounted at a side of the display screen. Each string-button is corresponding in position with one line of string-related instructions. The body includes a main CPU module, a data storage device, an audio circuit, a sound amplifier and a speaker therein. The body includes a control button and a bowstring-holding mechanism. The bowstring-holding mechanism includes a mounting groove in the body and a signal interface mounted in the bottom of the mounting groove. The bowstring module includes a base and a playing element; the playing element and the connection terminal are mounted on the base; the base is attached to the mounting groove by snap joint; and the connection terminal is connected with the signal interface.

    • Bowing platforms are disclosed for use in playing a bowed musical instrument without reliance on strings. A bowing platform includes a support and a track that replace the strings, bridge, and tailpiece on a conventional bowed instrument, to provide an alternative vibrational bowing surface. The bowing platform can be attached to a conventional fingerboard or to the body of the instrument. In one aspect, the bowing platform is useful as a bow guide to improve bow technique by restricting the player's bow angle to be within a desirable range, while still allowing for natural arm movement. The bowing platform can be further equipped with piezoelectric sensors to sense bowing motion and to create sound electronically in response to the sensed motion. A stringless bowed instrument includes a bowing platform, bowing sensors, and pitch sensors that sense finger placement along the fingerboard.

    • A pickup assembly is used with a string instrument having a plurality of strings and an elongated fingerboard against which the strings can be stopped, a bow having a filament adapted to be drawn across the strings, and a frequency synthesizer. The assembly is composed of a pickup on the fingerboard for detecting which strings are stopped, where therealong, and for generating an output corresponding thereto, a pickup connected to the bow for detecting action thereof for generating an output corresponding thereto, and a pickup connected to the strings for detecting which string is being contacted by the bow and for generating an output corresponding thereof. These resultant, mainly analog signals are then fed to a processor that is connected to all of the pickup for receiving the outputs thereof, digitizing these outputs, and feeding the digitized outputs to the synthesizer.

    • A preferred embodiment of the invention is an apparatus for measuring the position of a point with respect to at least one axis. The apparatus includes a reference electrode located at the reference point and at least one axial electrode fixed along the at least one axis. The axial electrode has a signal transmission property, such as resistivity, as measured between a first end and a point along the axis, which signal transmission property varies with the location of the point of measurement. The axial electrode is coupled to the reference electrode, typically capacitively. The apparatus also includes means for applying an electric signal to the reference electrode; means for measuring an output electric signal at the first end of the at least one axial electrode; and means for evaluating the relation between the output electric signal and the input electric signal to determine the position of the reference point relative to the axis. The invention also includes method of using the apparatus to determine the location of the reference point to the axis. The invention includes embodiments of one and more axes.
