摘要： An input/output (I/O) module has a programmable memory having a first memory address for receiving a module number and a second memory address for receiving a signal direction indicator. The I/O module is for use with a programmable controller system having a master controller serially connected to a plurality of I/O modules. The I/O module has a signal line operatively coupled with the memory. The signal line has a pair of inputs. Both inputs are configured and adapted for receiving a module number signal across a line connected therewith. The other one of the inputs will then propagate the module number signal downstream. A logic circuit sets the second memory address with the signal direction indicator corresponding to the module number signal being received by a particular one of the inputs.

The system includes sets of pins and matching pin receptacles electrically coupled to bus structures on circuit boards installed on base units onto which different types of I/O modules can be removably mounted. The pins and pin receptacles for each base unit are mounted on opposite lateral sides of the base units. The pins and pin receptacles are constructed and arranged for convenient interconnection between the bases of adjacent units whereby a common system backplane may be formed.

A control unit is electrically connected to a multi-conductor cable upon which are removably connected in series configuration a plurality of serially addressable control modules. The control modules are removably connected to elements of the controlled process to permit monitoring and control of the elements. The modules may be readily connected to or removed from the process elements and multi-conductor cable, to permit expansion or modification of the control system as needed for proper use in controlling process systems. The control modules operate independently from outside signals in monitoring the process elements, and respond to selected element status conditions by accessing communication with the central controller on a priority basis over other control modules in the system. The control unit includes a touch sensitive video screen for providing information to an receiving instructions from a user. The information and its configuration presented on the screen may be easily modified by user interaction with the screen, to quickly accommodate control system changes.

Blocks of discrete and block transfer data are transferred to and from a common memory in the I/O module where the data is accessible to a serial communication controller that interfaces the module to a high speed serial data channel. Asynchronous communication is provided between the serial communication controller and the peripheral device using a circular buffer in the common memory. Timing considerations are also disclosed.
