    • A color printer and method of operation wherein a plurality of color toners located within a fixed position carousel are transferred to the surface of a photoconductive drum. The media on which a printed image is to be formed is mounted on a stationary platform beneath the photoconductive drum, and the printed media is driven linearly back and forth on the fixed position platform during the formation of each of the cyan, yellow, magenta, and black color planes on the media. Then the media containing thee composite cyan, yellow, magenta, and black color image is passed through a pair of fuser rollers wherein the composite color image is fused into the media before the media is passed to an output media collection bin. During the above operation, the media supporting platform moves vertically in and out of contact with the photoconductive drum, allowing a pair of grit wheels to linearly move the paper within the printer housing and along the surfaces of contoured paper guides at each end of the platform. This feature minimizes the linear path of media travel in the printer, and in turn enables a significant reduction in the linear media travel dimension of the color printer.

    • A printing system for printing on a sheet of print media, the system including an electrophotographic printer operable to print on the sheet at a first print speed; and a color printer operable to print on the sheet of paper at a second print speed. The inkjet color printer includes a bidirectional sheet advancer operable to controllably move the sheet along an inkjet printer print path in either of first or second opposite directions, an inkjet pen carriage configured to support at least one inkjet pen and movable in a scan direction transverse to the inkjet printer print path for printing on the sheet, and a registration system operable to register a color image to be printed by the inkjet color printer relative to the black image printed by the electrophotographic printer. The registration system includes an optical sensor supported by the inkjet pen carriage for movement with the pen carriage along the scan direction.

    • An image forming apparatus has a reciprocally movable document support table for supporting a document to be copied and a conveyor belt movable in directions opposite to those of the movement of the document support table in synchronism therewith. The conveyor belt conveys an image transfer sheet onto which toner images will be transferred in superimposed relation from a photosensitive body. After the toner images have been transferred, they are fixed to the image transfer sheet by an image fixing device. After the toner image transfer, the conveyor belt can be driven at a speed equal to the speed of sheet transfer by the image fixing device. Driving power transmitted from the table driving system to the conveyor belt is shut off while the document support table is moving for a distance corresponding to a period of time from after the document support table starts moving and the photosensitive body starts being exposed to until the image starts being transferred from the photosensitive body onto the image transfer sheet, and thereafter the conveyor belt is driven in synchronism with the document support table. When successive images are transferred onto the image transfer sheet in superimposed relation such as to produce a colored copy, the conveyor belt is moved in synchronism with the document support table. When a single image is transferred onto the image transfer sheet, the conveyor belt is moved in synchronism with the photosensitive body.

    • A method and apparatus for color printing which comprises method steps and associated means for transferring color toners (C, Y, M, K) from either a rotatable carousel (46) or a fixed position carousel (76) to the surface of a photoconductive drum (30, 78). The media to be printed is passed linearly back and forth and tangentially to the surface of the drum (30, 78) to thereby form a composite color image on the media (22, 94). The above linear motion imparted to the printed media is made possible using relatively low cost, well developed linear mechanisms which are currently available, for example, in the fields of document copying and media plotting. Each C, Y, M, and K color plane image is superimposed one upon another on the surface of the media after being transferred thereto from the photoconductive drum (30, 78). Then the media containing the composite cyan, yellow, magenta, and black color image is passed through a pair of fuser rollers (66, 68 and 110, 112) where the composite color image is fused into the media before the media is passed to an output media collection bin (74, 122). Using the rotating carousel (46), linear motion is imparted to the media (22) by a linearly moving platform (24). Using the fixed position carousel (76), linear motion is imparted to the media by the use of pairs of grit wheels (132, 134) in direct contact with the media (94).

    • A printing system for printing multiple colors on a sheet of print media includes an electrophotographic printer having a photoconductor drum and a transfer roller configured to interact in co-rotation with the drum during transfer of a color image plane from the drum onto a sheet of print media passed therebetween. A paper drive sheet feeder system is included which has a grit shaft extending generally transverse of a paper travel path, a first pinch roller configured to interact in co-rotation with the grit shaft along a first edge of a sheet of print media, and a second pinch roller configured to interact in co-rotation with the grit shaft along a second edge of the sheet of print media. The grit shaft is driven in rotation to drive the sheet of print media along a bidirectional sheet travel path such that a plurality of different colored image planes is superposed onto the sheet of print media in accurate registration therebetween. A method for printing multiple colors is also described.

    • A color image recording apparatus for producing a composite color image on a paper sheet by developing electrostatic latent images formed on a photoconductive element, which is implemented as a belt, in different colors. The belt is supported and driven in a rotary motion by at least two rollers, i.e., a drive roller and a tension roller. The drive roller is fixed in place at a transfer station, while the tension roller is situated downstream of an exposure station with respect to the intended direction of rotation of the belt, i.e., at a developing station side. More specifically, the tension roller is so positioned as not to be effected by a change in the configuration of the belt ascribable to the selective content of developing rollers of individual developing units with the belt. The length of the belt as measured from the exposure station to the transfer station is maintained constant. The belt moves at the same speed at both of the exposure station and transfer station.
