    • A proofing system incorporates an image member having a dielectric surface and a write head for writing a pattern of electrostatic image dots on the surface. A controller is provided for controlling the write head in response to digital data representing an original document so that the image dots of the pattern may have variable field strengths and form a latent electrostatic image of the document on the surface. The controller also controls the areas of the image dots written on the surface in accordance with the digital data. An inking head presents an electrostatic ink to the surface whereby the surface acquires ink only at the image dots thereon in amounts proportional to the field strengths of the image dots so as to develop the latent image on the surface. A printing substrate is supported and pressed against the image member surface so that the ink is released from the surface to the substrate thereby producing a proof copy of the original document consisting of a pattern of print dots with variable gray scale values and/or sizes so that the system may produce proof copies composed of patterns of dots which emulate the printing structure produced by an offset press or a gravure press.

    • @ An electrophotographic proofing method is described that uses a proofing element (1) comprising a photoconductive layer on an electrically conducting substrate capable of transmitting actinic radiation to which the photoconductive layer is responsive, and a dielectric support (2), releasably adhered to the rest of the element, comprising said photoconductive layer or an overcoat thereof, forming a surface of the element capable of holding an applied electrostatic charge. In the method the dielectric support surface is charged, and the photoconductive layer imagewise-exposed to actinic radiation, thereby forming a developable electrostatic image on the dielectric surface. The electrostatic image, in turn, is developed with toner to form a first color image. A composite color image is formed on the element by repeating the sequence one or more times with image-wise exposure of the photoconductive layer to actinic radiation transmitted through the transparent substrate, and developing over each preceding image with a different color toner. The composite toner image (10,13,14,15) is transferred with the dielectric support (2) to a receiving element (16) to form a color copy such as a three-color filter array or a color proof (19) closely simulating the color print expected from a full press run.

    • Process for color-copying a colored original which involves the color selections of said original, characterized(a) by photocopying and developing each of said color selections with developers containing dyestuffs which are sublimable or vaporizable between 130 and 230.degree. C and which correspond to the photocopied color selection,(b) by transferring these copies successively by superposing its in registration onto an intermediary support, in order to reconstitute the inverse color image of the original, and(c) by righting said intermediate image by transferring in one heating-step on the final support and the color photocopies obtained by the process.
