    • A multistage thermostat includes multistage cycler means 36 comprising a primary cycler 37 which controls a primary heating stage (heat pump) and a plurality of cyclers (38 to 40) which control respective stages of secondary heat (electric heat). The setpoint means Tsp is driven by a clock 11 and night setback and day setup means 12. The setpoint means and a temperature sensor Ts are differenced to form a signal for controlling the multistage cycler. The error signal is fed through a proportional constant means 21 and an integrator means 25 in parallel to control the multistage cycler means. To prevent the primary heating stage going off at setback when the temperature is low, and prevent secondary heating stages coming on on setup when the primary heating means can handle the load, there is a large linear temperature separation between the operation of the primary and the secondary heating means.

    • An air conditioning system including a furnace (14) and a heat pump (18) selectively operable to provide relatively warm air to an enclosure. An indoor thermostat (46) having first and second threshold temperature settings senses the temperature of the air in the enclosure. A control coordinates the operation of the heat pump (18) and furnace (14) in response to the sensed temperature of the air in the enclosure. The control is operable in a first state to selectively activate the heat pump (18) whenever the first threshold temperature exceeds the sensed temperature and is operable in a second state to solely activate the furnace (14) whenever the second threshold temperature exceeds the sensed temperature. Whenever the furnace (14) is activated, the furnace (14) is maintained active and the heat pump inactive until the sensed temperature exceeds the first threshold temperature.

    • Apparatus are disclosed for conditioning the air within an indoor space and include first heat transfer means for selectively heating air passing to the space and a heat pump selectively operable in a heating mode, also for heating air passing to the indoor space. Control means are provided for effecting operation of the first heat transfer means and the heat pump which include means for sensing the demand for heat within the indoor space and for distinguishing between a relatively low demand and a relatively high demand. Operation of the heat pump is effected in response to a relatively low demand for heat until such demand is satisfied. In the event that a relatively high demand for heat is sensed, operation of the heat pump is terminated and the first heat transfer means is operated until such time as both the relatively high and low demands for heat are satisfied. In the event that outdoor ambient temperature drops below a predetermined level, means are provided for preventing operation of the heat pump and for effecting operation of the first heat transfer means in response to the relatively low demand for heat.
