    • A fuel injection system with a fuel injection pump whose high-pressure delivery is determined by an electrically controlled valve that controls a discharge conduit. The phase of the high-pressure delivery is determined by the closing of the control valve.     • A fuel injection system for a diesel engine has a plunger barrel with a fuel intake port and a plunger slidable axially in the barrel. A plunger operating cam has a pair of lobes for operating the plunger. During either the intake or the compression stroke, the cam advances the plunger to a first position blocking the port to inject fuel, after which the plunger retracts. At the end of the compression stroke, the cam advances the plunger further to a second position to block the port to inject fuel. A switching device is effective to rotate the plunger between a starting position and a running position. In the starting position, the peripheral surface of the plunger blocks the port during the two fuel injection strokes of the plunger and, in the running position, the plunger is rotated to a position where its peripheral surface blocks the port only upon the further advance of the plunger to the second position. The invention improvement comprises at least one fuel passage in the plunger connecting the peripheral surface to the inner end face of the plunger and communicating with a by-pass fuel intake port in the barrel, only during starting of the engine, and in the second plunger position. The by-pass fuel intake port is spaced angularly from the main fuel intake port.

    • A high pressure fuel pump having a variable fuel injection rate, including a pump body, a pump cylinder formed in the pump body and a piston reciprocable within the pump cylinder, which defines a pressurization chamber. The pump piston has a reduced diameter portion which provides a primary piston. A piston annulus is slidably mounted thereon and provides a secondary piston. An annular actuation chamber adjoins the secondary piston opposite the pressurization chamber. An actuation passage is provided between a return fuel drain and the actuation chamber, which is selectively open or closed passively by pump piston movement and/or dynamically by operation of an actuation solenoid valve. If the actuation chamber passage is open, then during the pressurization stroke the secondary piston will remain stationary relative to the pump body, but if it is closed then the secondary piston must stroke in unison with the primary piston.
