    • A piece of soiled fabric (39) is cleaned by contacting it with a jet of an ionized soil-dislodging gas to dislodge the soil therefrom. The ionized gas and the use of an oppositely charged electrostatic filter (34) aid in preventing redeposition of the soil onto the fabric (39). The fabric (39) may be agitated while it is contacted with the gas jet. A portion of the piece of fabric (39) may be treated with an electrostatic spotting compound that enhances the effect of the ionized gas and may also enhance the removal of the soil. An apparatus (30) for accomplishing the cleaning includes a container (36) having an interior (38) in which the fabric (39) is received, a gas jet nozzle (46) directed into the interior (38) of the container (36), a source (50, 52) of a pressurized gas communicating with an inlet of the gas jet nozzle (46), a gas jet manifold (44) extending from the source (50, 52) to the gas jet nozzle (46), and a gas ionizer (80) disposed to ionize the pressurized gas passing through the gas jet nozzle (46).

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized rotating-drum mat washing machine which is suited to wash a mat elastic even in a bending direction, facilitates insertion of the mat into a rotating drum, and prevents displacements of the mat and the unbalance of the rotating drum from being caused during washing.
      SOLUTION: The rotating drum 3 of the washing machine is equipped with a bi-cylindrical structure composed of outer and inner cylinders 7 and 8; and the inner cylinder 8 is eccentric with respect to the outer cylinder 7. The rotating drum 3 is rotated about a shaft center of the outer cylinder 7. A radial gap for inserting the mat, which is located between the inner and outer cylinders 8 and 7, is made narrow on an eccentric side 14 and made wide on an anti- eccentric side. The vicinities of both ends of the mat, which is to be kept in a straight state, are inserted into a widened part at the insertion of the mat, so that the mat can be easily inserted without the need to forcedly bend the ends of the mat. A balance member 15 is provided on the anti-eccentric side of the inner cylinder 8, so that the unbalance, which is caused by eccentricity of the inner cylinder 8, can be equalized. A stopper for preventing the circumferential displacements of the mat in the rotating drum 3 is provided to be capable of serving as the balance member 15.
