    • A safety device (18, Fig 1 ) for a horse (12) comprises an air bag (24) and an inflation means, the safety device (18) being adapted to be mounted to a saddle (14) or saddle pad (16). The airbag (24) is substantially horseshoe shaped and when inflated is adapted to extend around a horse's hind quarters up one flank, across the back of the horse, and down the other flank. Inflation of the airbag (24) is triggered when the safety device is moved to a substantially vertically disposed position as encountered in a rotational fall. A second embodiment of airbag (42) with a pyramidal shape is shown in Figure 4 .

    • A protective boot (30) for the ankle of a horse includes a flexible panel (32) with a middle portion (34) and two opposing side portions (36,38) extending outwardly therefrom. The middle portion is suitable for abutting the digital flexor tendon of the horse. The two opposing side portions are suitable for wrapping around the ankle of the horse. A slot (58) is provided which extends along the digital extensor tendon and is defined by the two opposing side portions. A cup (44) is formed at a bottom of the middle portion, the cup receiving the proximal sesamoid bones of the ankle of the horse. Lateral grooves (46,48) are provided, which are positioned over the palmar digital veins of the horse. The flexible panel includes an outer foam layer (54) and an inner heat-absorbing layer (56). A reinforcing elastic wrap (64) is removably affixed around the flexible panel.

    • A hoof boot has a base, a heel captivator, and a pivoting mechanism that disposes the heel captivator to pivot relative to the base, preferably in a manner that allows the heel captivator at least three degrees of freedom of movement relative to the base. The heel captivator is preferably low in the rearmost portion, which provides clearance for the pastern bones of the equine lower leg to descend upon weight bearing during movement at various gaits. To reduce the possibility for bruising and chaffing of soft tissue around the pastern bones, and to help eliminate accumulation of debris, preferred heel captivators have an open mesh architecture. Heel captivators can alternatively or additionally be designed with fabric covered neoprene or other liners. Boots are preferably tightened using mechanically advantages laces.

    • A one piece hoof sock bandage for use with horses, livestock, and other hoofed animals includes an elastic, water resistant sock material having a sole portion coated with a resilient, puncture resistant material. The sock material provides uniform compression to avoid constriction and extends up the leg to the pastern or higher where it is held in place by a cuff portion. The resilient sole portion covers the sole of the hoof and extends up the wall of the hoof far enough to prevent the sole portion from sliding on the hoof and to protect as much of the hoof as desired. The sock and sole portions may contain medications in various forms and generally function to treat the hoof area and protect it from contamination.
