    • A label applicator for self-adhesive labels is disclosed. The applicator includes cam tracks (42, 44) which control the orientation of two print heads (20, 22) during motion from a rest position to a printing position. A rotary inking roller (62) is positioned along the path of the operative facets of each print head and inking takes place during movement of the print head to ensure contact during one part of the cycle and avoids such contact during the return. The inking action is such that the roller (62) is rotated by the operative facets. At the instant inking takes place, a part of the cam track serves to prevent later motion of those print facets. The invention can be applied to label applicators (or dispensers) wherever there is a need for high quality printing on labels.

    • A feed wheel (72) advances a release liner supporting the labels. A brake (96) prevents movement of the label stock (35) during application of a label. A ratchet (94) and pawl (92) arrangement incrementally advances the feed wheel each time a hand lever (54) is returned to its rest position. At the same time, a second ratchet (168) and pawl (162) arrangement is effective to remove the brake during the incremental label stock advancement. The feed and brake release ratchets are preferably integrally connected to opposite sides of the feed wheel. Mechanisms are also provided for ensuring removal of the brake prior to incremental label stock advancement and for manually latching the brake in its released position during loading of label stock in the apparatus.
      An inking roller mechanism (65) for the apparatus print head (62) includes a latching mechanism (214) which in a first position latches the ink roll in place and in a second, non-latching position permits removal and replacement of the ink roll without tools. Further, the print head construction is such that one of a different number of print heads may be secured into the apparatus, again without tools. Further, the print head includes a plurality of print bands (310) mounted on upper and lower drive gears (312, 314) where the lower drive gears are hexagonal in shape. A selector shaft (340) which may be shifted to a selected print band and then rotated to rotate the print band to a selected position includes a selector shaft detenting means (350, 354) which detents the shaft close to the axis thereof.

    • A hand labeling device is described with the aid of which self-adhering labels in the course of an operating cycle can be imprinted, dispensed and attached to articles. In a device housing a printing mechanism (34) is arranged for producing an imprint on a self-adhering label disposed in a printing position. A transport means (22) brings the self-adhering labels consecutively into the printing position and into the position for application to the articles. The printing types of the printing mechanism (34) are inked with the aid of an inking device before each printing operation, said device including an inking roll (46) which is adapted to roll on the print types and which is rotatably mounted in an inking roll holder (48) which during the rolling of the inking roll on the print types is guided in a guideway (54) in the housing by means of guide pins (52, 53) extending parallel to the inking roll. The guideway (54) comprises an exit opening (64) for the guide pins (52, 53) on the inking roll holder (48) and on the device housing (10) a flap (56) is provided which is pivotal between a closed and an open position and on which at least one extension (60) is disposed which in the closed position of the flap (56) closes the exit opening (64) of the guideway (54).
