    • The present invention includes means for maintaining a printing element in its home position without any accompanying noise and for thereafter moving the carrier to its left margin position after the power switch is turned on. A latch member controlled by an actuator engages a notch in a flange of a rotating printing element drive gear for establishing the home position of the printing element. When the latch member engages the flange, the printing element drive gear motor is deenergized, stopping rotation of the drive gear, and the noise which would otherwise be caused by the print element drive motor continuously trying to rotate against the latch member is eliminated.

    • An apparatus for confirming the correct impression of printing characters wherein any of the characters arranged in at least one line circumferentially extending on the peripheral surface of a cylindrical printing drum is designated by controlling the operation of the printing drum to be brought to a prescribed printing position on the surface of the recording medium for printing and the printing drum can be moved in the axial direction, and which comprises a detector for detecting a circumferential angle defined by the position of the selected one of said linearly arranged characters with a point of referential angle provided on the rotating printing drum; a counter for counting signals denoting the steps of the rotation of said printing drum required for said selected character to take a desired printing position; and a comparison circuit for comparing a number of rotation steps required for the printing drum to return to the point of a referential angle after impression of one line of characters on a recording medium is brought to an end and a number of rotation steps required for the printing drum to run through a circumferential angle defined by the position of the terminal character of the respective lines impressed on the recording medium with the referential angle point, thereby finding an error, if any, occurring in impressing the respective lines on the recording medium.

    • A dot matrix printer in which, for the purpose of supervising the quality of the printing of dot matrix characters, an optical sensor (32) is provided for each dot producing element (11) of a print head (5). Each optical sensor (32) includes two glass fibers (34, 36) to carry light from a light-emitting diode to the surface of a record medium and to carry the reflected light to a photodiode. Each printed dot is detected and the sensor output is compared with a delayed or stored print signal which is applied to the drivers for the dot producing printing elements (11). The print head (5) may either be a wire matrix or an ink jet print head.

    • In a thermal printer, data in the form of character data separated by gaps is supplied over a data line (38) to a shift register (15). the latched outputs of which cause operation of thermal elements (R 1 -R N ) in a thermal printhead (11 During a test mode of operation, test data is supplied to operate the thermal elements (R 1 -R N ) in succession, a sensing resistor (R s ) providing corresponding test signals which are digitized by an A/D converter (39). Each digitized test signal is compared with an associated initial, stored, digitized test signal, and if the current value deviates by more than a predetermined amount from the initial value, a failure signal is provided. A processor (19) is thereupon effective to cause the subsequent character data to be shifted such that the defective element is aligned with a location which is not used for printing, such as an intercharacter gap. In a modification, the test signals for all the thermal elements (R 1 -R N ) are compared with a common fixed, predetermined reference level.
