    • This invention comprises improvements to cantilevered roughing, intermediate and finishing rolling mill stands, as primarily applied to the hot rolling of long products. A basic improvement to 2-high and cluster mill stands includes mounting of the rolling bearings (20) upon a stationary cantilevered arbor (12) directly under the roll ring (21), eliminating heavily-loaded main reaction bearings confined in limited radial space when mounted within the stand housing. Individual drive motor assemblies for each shaft, rigidly coupled and directly supported by the drive shafts (28), are a preferred feature, rather than floor-mounted drives via pinion stands to spindles and couplings. This eliminates drive reaction forces acting against the stand assembly, allowing direct measurement and control of interstand tension/compression by means of inter-stand load bars, facilitating applications to tandem mill trains incorporating direct, automatic cascade tension-free rolling. A cluster mill assembly features work roll cartridge assemblies adapted for off-line set-up, to provide very fast roll and guide changes, which is particularly applicable to intermediate and finishing pass applications. The work rolls (64, 130) are neckless, with the cartridge frame (58) and bearings (65) serving only to maintain roll position, rather than carry rolling loads. Roll size and material can then be governed by stock size and reduction requirements, rather than by load carrying capacity. Means are provided for axial adjustment of roll position, and also for roll parting symmetrically about the pass line. Roll stand mountings having quickly-interchangeable horizontal, vertical or angular transverse orientation are additional features.
