    • A multi-use flotation device (e.g., 100) includes two end sections (e.g., 101, 103) integrally connected to a central section (e.g., 102). The central section is configured and arranged to accommodate a torso of the user without significantly impeding a full range of movement of the appendages of the user when the user lays on at least the central section. The end sections are characterized by respective geometric shapes that are generally wider than the central section. One of the end sections accommodates at least a head of the user when the user lays on at least the central section. The other end section accommodates at least a derriere of the user when the user lays on at least the central section. The two end sections and the central section together form a concave, unitary device.

    • An apparatus for effecting spinal traction on a patient includes a tub containing liquid in which a patient, buoyantly supported by a floatation device, can float in a generally upright position in a state of buoyant equilibrium. The level of the liquid in the tub can be varied, which effects a variation on a traction force acting on the patient as the floatation device seeks new positions of buoyant equilibrium in response to the change in liquid level. The traction force may be generated by one or more weighted devices worn on the body of the patient or by a harness attached to the patient and secured within the tub to resist upward movement of the patient when the liquid level rises in the tub. The liquid level within the tub is varied by a liquid level varying apparatus associated with the tub which operates generally by displacing a volume of liquid within the tub to vary the level of the liquid by an amount corresponding to the volume of displaced liquid. A method for effecting spinal traction includes floating a patient in a vessel of water, applying a body-tensioning force to the patient's body, and raising and lowering the level of liquid in the vessel to effect variations in the body-tensioning force as the patient's floating body seeks a new position of buoyant equilibrium.

    • The invention pertains to a support apparatus for supporting a patient's head, back and buttocks on an inclined angle in the range of 10.degree. to 35.degree. while immersed in a hydrotherapy tub or tank. The back support apparatus includes a tubular frame with flexible webbing stretched across and attached to the tubular frame. A pair of legs are attached to the frame for supporting a patent on an inclined angle in the tub. Another variation of the back support apparatus includes a pair of support straps attached to the tubular frame and the tank for supporting a patient on an inclined angle in the range of 10.degree. to 35.degree. while immersed in the tube or tank.

    • An exercise device comprising a flotation jacket worn by an exerciser in water which enables the exerciser to float in an upright position while exercising and without contact with the bottom or sides of the enclosure holding the water. The jacket is fabricated from a fabric with pockets sewn in the fabric for insertion of segments of flotation material. The size and location of the segments result in equal buoyant forces at the front and back and at the sides of of the exerciser to assure that the exerciser remains upright while floating in water. The fabric is such that the friction between the flotation jacket and the exerciser is increased when the fabric is emersed in water thereby preventing the jacket from riding up under the armpits of the exerciser. The flotation jacket can be fabricated easily and at low cost by using standard materials and production techniques without the need for expensive molding equipment. A buoyant support system for use in exercising is also disclosed which enables the exerciser wearing the flotation device and a harness to be supported by cables in a tank attached to the exercising device while the exerciser is floating and exercising in water placed in the tank.
