    • An intrauterine contraceptive device made from plastic and having a perimetral ring with or without a central membrane and including perimetral appendages having scalloped side edges located on each of the side portions of the perimetral ring. The width of the outer scallops preferably decreases as the locations of the scallops approach the tail portion, providing the IUD with an inverted somewhat pear shaped scalloped outline when viewed in plan. A marker and extraction string or line is secured at the nose portion but can be secured to the tail portion. The scalloped appendages are constructed in the manner of webs which are substantially flat or they can be hollow with a bulbous cross-section. Internal of the perimetral ring is preferably a membrane which may be a single wall or made hollow by having a double wall. The membrane has openings at least adjacent the nose and the tail. The internal membrane can be centrally disposed or made as internally scalloped appendages.

    • An intrauterine contraceptive device made from plastic and having a perimetral ring with or without a central membrane and including wide paddle-shaped retrograde spurs having a tapering cross-section located on each of the outer side portions of the perimetral ring. The spurs preferably have a retrograde inclination and decreasing length from a nose portion of the perimetral ring toward the tail portion, the nose portion being slightly wider than the tail portion providing the IUD with an inverted pear shaped outline when viewed in plan. A marker and extraction string or line is preferably secured at the nose portion but can be secured to the tail portion. Between spurs, thin webs may be utilized to provide increased IUD surface area. The webs may or may not be secured to the spurs and may terminate between or beyond the spurs. Internal of the perimetral ring is preferably a membrane having openings at least adjacent the nose and the tail.

    • An intrauterine device composite is provided which comprises a plastic matrix, such as a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate, having a particulate material selected from the group consisting of metals such as copper, zinc, silver, platinum, or cadmium, and metal salts dispersed within the matrix. The particulate preferably includes both a metal and a salt, such as a sulfate, thereof, although solely a salt or a metal particulate may be utilized. In addition, a radio-opaque particulate such as barium sulfate is preferably also dispersed within the composite. The particulate material preferably comprises between 0.1% to 50% by weight of the composite, and the matrix preferably has a water permeability or rate of water vapor transmission of at least 0.3 grams/100 square inches/24 hours/mil at 25* C.
