    • A ski boot comprising an outer boot having a sole on which an improved foot supporting insert rests, the insert including a footbed supported by a rear heel balance post, a central metatarsal balance pad and a forward toe balance pad, the insert forming and holding the foot of a skier in a functional cavus or high-arched foot positon when a foot is placed thereon and being laterally tiltable relative to the sole within the boot upon inversion or eversion of the foot thereby creating a weight shift which is transferred to a lateral edge of a ski attached to the boot causing the ski to turn.

    • Improvement in ski boot construction wherein the sole portion (30) of the outer ski boot or shell (16) is joined with a ski-engaging portion (34) of the ski boot by a flexible or deformable connecting means or connection (44) of a character providing for lateral lilting movement of the outer shell or foot containing portion of the ski boot relative to the ski-engaging portion (34) thereby enabling the skier by shifting his weight to deform or tilt the connecting means or connection to maneuver changes of direction of the ski with a minimum of twisting, straining and lateral movement of the knees or the torso of the skier. The disclosure of the invention further includes the use of removable means or inserts (70, 72) of compressible material which may be disposed between the sole portion (30) of the outer shell and the ski-engaging portion (34) at the sides of the flexible or deformable connecting means or connection (44) for varying the resistance to tiltability or deformability of the connecting means or connection (44) so that the ski may be rendered adaptable to the requirements best suited for a particular skier.

    • This invention provides a novel elevated toe device system that allows the wearer's toes to be elevated to a perpendicular or approaching a perpendicular orientation relative to the line of gravity and undertake activities, such as downhill skiing, with a greater amount of control of the skis and/or snowboard as a result of the elevated toes. The conventional systems do not make use of the natural qualities of the foot. On a downward slope, the device permits the wearer to enjoy the dynamics of the foot and assume a stance that presents less strain on the foot while accentuating maneuverability. The device can be a preset system, in which the wearer can interchange devices of different angular orientations to modify the posture of the toes, or adjustable. In an alternate embodiment, the device can be provided so that the surface under the big toe presents an elevated angular orientation.

    • A device for limiting dorsiflexion past a chosen, optimum angle while permitting further forward flexion of the leg relative to the sport shoe contact surface. The device is advantageously used with a sport shoe including a sole, a shell mounted to the sole for receipt of the user's foot and an upwardly extending movable tongue or cuff mounted to the shell. The sole includes an upper foot supporting surface. In one embodiment the tongue is positioned so that dorsiflexion of the user's leg causes the tongue to move forward. The tongue is coupled to the upper foot supporting surface so that dorsiflexion between an initial angle and an optimum angle is relatively unrestrained but further dorsiflexion past the optimum angle is minimized or eliminated by the concurrent lifting of the upper foot supporting surface. In another embodiment the sole is a unitary member and the upper foot supporting surface is a part of the sole. In this embodiment a tongue assembly stops dorsiflexion past an optimum angle. Further forward flexion of the leg relative to the sport shoe contact surface after the optimum dorsiflexion angle has been attained tends to raise the entire heel end of the sole.

    • A shoe having a dynamic fitting and shock absorption system. Disposed within the shoe is an insert defined by a sensing means including a U-shaped pivot bar that straddles a movable footbed. The bar has an upper end attached to a strap extending over the instep and forefoot. The opposite end of the strap is attached to the footbed. The bar is pivotally secured to the sides of the footbed. The lower end of the bar rests on the shoe sole. Movement of the footbed in a downward direction upon foot strike pivots the bar toward a position parallel to the footbed dynamically tightening the strap on the foot and distributing a portion of the shock load to the midfoot and forefoot.
