    • During the twine wrapping cycle after complete formation of the bale, the bale continues to sping in the baling chamber, and twine from a pair of separate dispensing tubes is wrapped around the bale in helical fashion as the tubes swing back and forth along the length of the bale. The tubes swing in mutually opposite directions during the cycle and start and finish in a crossed position, thereby each moving from one end of the bale to the opposite end thereof and then back again to complete the cycle. As the tubes cross each other near the midlength of the bale during their return strokes, the twine strands become interlaced so as to more effectively bind the bale and promote structural integrity thereof. Separate cutoffs for each tube sever the twine strands as the tubes approach their home positions.

    • A rotary baling machine for forming large cylindrical bales of cut crop material such as hay which includes an improved twine feeding mechanism for winding twine around the formed bales and an improved articulated drive shaft extending from the power source of the towing vehicle to the power transmitting means of the baling machine for driving the baling mechanism. The twine feeding mechanism includes an improved twine guiding and feeding means which permits controlled and uniform wrapping of twine around the desired length of the bale and further includes a simplified means for cutting the twine at the completion of each bale wrapping cycle. The twine feeding mechanism is driven by a hydraulic means which can be readily controlled by the tractor operator whereby the operator can regulate the amount and position of twine wound around the bale. The power transmitting means of the baling machine and the articulated drive means connecting the power take-off of the towing vehicle to the power transmitting means are positioned laterally with respect to the center line of the baling machine to avoid the collection of undesirable debris in front of the bale forming area and to permit the operator an unobstructed view of the baling mechanism and twine wrapping mechanism and increased control over these operations. The articulated drive means is particularly provided with means for permitting a wide range of horizontal angular displacement of the towing vehicle and the baler and for transmitting power to the power transmitting means at a constant angular velocity.

    • A baler (10) for wrapping a rotating bale (52) of crop material (26) with strands of twine (72) has two twine tubes (68) through which the twine is fed so that ends of the strands dangle from the tubes. A bale density sensor (36) senses bale density and a controller (42) compares the sensed density with a desired density selected by an operator via an operator control panel (34). When the sensed density reaches about half the desired density the twine tubes are moved to a twine insert position so that the ends of the strands dangle adjacent the rotating bale. When a full bale has been formed, a duckbill (60) is actuated to push the ends of the strands toward the bale where they are caught up in the crop material. If either strand is not caught up in the rotating bale, the operator may abort the wrap cycle and initiate a new wrap cycle by pressing a wrap key on the control panel. The twine tubes are moved to a twine cut position, the twine is cut, the twine tubes returned to the twine insert position, and the duckbill is again actuated to push the strand ends toward the bale.

    • A large round baler includes a twine wrap mechanism having twine arms which sweep horizontally between opposite side walls of the baling chamber at a location above the pickup and below the bale starter roll. Mounted to one of the baling chamber side walls is a twine guide finger for guiding the twine to the circumference of the bale such that wraps of twine are spaced from the adjacent end of the bale by a distance sufficient to keep the twine from being fed between the wall and the bale end or from slipping off the end of the bale during handling of the bale once discharged from the chamber. The guide finger, in one embodiment, comprises a spring wire member having a guide end portion that is joined to coils that are mounted about a support rod extending through the side wall of the baling chamber. In an alternate embodiment, the rod has a straight portion extending through the chamber side wall and joined to an inner end shaped to perform twine guidance, the outer end of the straight portion being connected to a coil spring that permits the rod to pivot about its straight portion so that the twine guidance portion of the rod will deflect rearwardly in response to crop being fed to the baling chamber. In both embodiments, the rod is adjustably fixed to the outside of the side wall by a manual adjustment permitting the support rod to be moved in and out among an infinite number of positions within a range of adjustment so as to change the spacing of the twine guide fingers relative to the side wall so as to accommodate bales having surfaces of varying slickness due to different crops and/or crop conditions.
