    • A container system for the shipping and storing of product such as bananas, comprising: (a) a substantially rigid outer container having at least one ventilation opening; (b) a closable inner container positioned within the outer container for receiving the product, the inner container having a bottom portion and a top portion; and (c) means attached to the top portion of the inner container for opening the inner container so as to provide increased ventilation to the product. The inner container preferably comprises a flexible bag having a sealed bottom as its bottom portion, an open top adjacent the top portion, and a perforation extending about at least a portion of the bag, so that the opening means opens the bag by severing the bag at the perforation. The opening means may comprise a cord attached to the top portion of the bag. A method of packing, shipping and storing product, comprising the steps of: (a) providing an inner and outer container for the product at a first location, the outer container being of a substantially rigid construction, and having at least one ventilation opening, and wherein the inner container has a top portion, a bottom portion, and an open end adjacent the top portion; (b) placing the inner container within the outer container; (c) placing the product inside the inner container; (d) providing a means attached to the top portion for opening the inner container; (e) closing the inner container so that the inner container is substantially sealed at the top portion to thus containerize the product; (f) shipping the containerized product to a second location; (g) opening the inner container using the opening means, so as to provide increased ventilation to the product within the inner container through the at least one ventilation opening; and (g) storing the containerized product at the second location. The inner container may comprise a flexible bag having a perforation between the top and bottom portions, so that the opening step severs the bag at the perforation, preferably removing the top portion of the bag, thereby providing the increased ventilation. The opening means may comprise a cord affixed to the top portion of the bag, so that the opening step comprises pulling the cord to remove the top portion of the bag.

    • A method and apparatus for providing a stream of fluid around fresh produce, which produce is stored in containers provided with openings in the sides. A consecutive row of a multiplicity of such containers is arranged along a wall some distance from the latter, in such a way that an interspace is formed between the wall and the row. At least one bag which extends along at least one edge of the row is inflated in the interspace by feeding a fluid to the bag, in such a way that the bag produces a seal against the wall on one side and against the row on the other. The fluid fed to the bag flows via outflow openings made in the bag into the interspace and builds up an elevated pressure here. The fluid then flows from the interspace, via the openings in the sides of the container, around the fresh produce. The invention can be used in particular in storage rooms in which rows of containers containing fresh produce can be arranged along opposing side walls. It is particularly advantageous if the inflatable bag, when inflated, is able to form a ring-shaped seal enclosing the interspace on all sides.

    • Integrated banana transport system from the banana plantation to the retail point of sale. The system consists of twelve baskets and a wagon. A bunch of bananas is placed on each basket. The basket can be used at all stages of harvesting, washing, processing, storage, transportation and final disposal. The contact with the bananas, which causes an aesthetic degradation of the product, is minimized. The bunch of bananas is placed on the basket. The upper part of the stalk is nailed on the nail (1) of the hanger (2), while the lower part is placed on the embossed area of the basket's base (3). Beams are placed at the corners of the wagon's base where the rack is attached at the desired height. Six baskets are placed at the bottom of the wagon's base and six on the rack. The basket and the wagon can be assembled and disassembled by hand without any need of tools. The disassembled system occupies minimal space, making less expensive the return to the plantation.
