    • This invention relates to a diffuser and more particularly to a chain diffuser for use in a sugar extraction process. The diffuser includes a diffuser floor, and a plurality of chain ladder assemblies being displaceable relative to the diffuser floor. Each of the chain ladder assemblies comprise two opposing chains being driven by drive sprockets, with the drive sprockets located on a drive shaft arrangement. The drive shaft arrangement includes at least two independent drive shafts located end to end, with each drive shaft driven by its own dedicated driving means. The diffuser is characterized in that the drive shaft arrangement includes synchronization means for ensuring that the two drive shafts rotate at the same speed.

    • The invention concerns a rotary distribution apparatus (30) for distributing process liquids, typically in ion exchange and chromatographic separation in the processing of sugar juice. The apparatus includes a core (2) into which fixed process liquid supply pipes (3) extend and annular fluid distribution chambers defined between the core and an outer shell (4) which rotates around the core. Rotating pipes (5) are provided which rotate with the shell and which are connected between selected distribution chambers and selected ports in a rotating indexing disc (6) which rotates, with the shell, relative to a stationary indexing disc (7). The arrangement is such that as the rotating disc rotates, different streams of process liquid streams fed to the rotating disc through the rotating pipes are introduced to fixed ports in the stationary disc. The latter ports are arranged to feed the streams selectively to selected destinations. According to the invention interstage pumps operating to pump the process liquids are mounted to rotate about the core with the rotating pipes and the rotating indexing disc. This leads to a particularly simple design compared to conventional simulated moving bed configurations with fixed pumps.

    • A process for treating clarified sugar cane juice includes subjecting, in a first treatment stage, the juice to purification to remove particles larger than about 0.1 micron. The clarified sugar juice then passes through a primary ion exchange stage in which it is sequentially brought into contact with at least one strong acid cation ion exchange resin in the hydrogen form and thereafter with at least one weak base anion ion exchange resin in the hydroxide form, to effect primary demineralization of the sugar juice. Thereafter the sugar juice is passed through a secondary ion exchange stage in which it is sequentially brought into contact with at least one strong base anion ion exchange resin in the hydroxide form and thereafter with at least one acid cation ion exchange resin, to effect secondary demineralization of the sugar juice. Sugar products are recovered from the resultant purified sugar solution.
