    • Fluid pump systems for use in an open loop or closed loop system driven by a motor that does not impede the flow of fluid being pumped are disclosed. A first fluid pump system includes an in-line direct drive motor. The rotor (46, 48) and stator (44) of the motor are positioned about an axis of fluid flow so as not to impede the fluid flow. A second fluid pump system includes an off-line indirect drive motor. The fluid being pumped is driven by an impeller (56) coupled to the inside wall surface of a rotatable member (50) and the outside wall surface of the rotatable member is driven by a motor external to the fluid flow. The motor parts (46, 48) are fully integrated with the pump rotor (56) to drive the pump, therein reducing the number of component requirements, and increasing pump efficiency.

    • A barrel or face-type carbon-segment commutator assembly (12c) for an electric motor includes a segmented commutating surface (22c) defined by an annular array of commutator sector (14c, 18c), each sector including a carbon segment (18c) connected to a respective conductor section (14c). To form the assembly, an annular carbon cylinder (20c) is overmolded onto a copper blank (70c) and radial grooves (54c) are formed in an inside surface of the carbon cylinder opposite the communicating surface. An insulator hub (24c) is overmolded onto the carbon cylinder and into the radial grooves. Slots (56c) are then machined inward from the communicating surface to the insulator-filled grooves to isolate the commutator sectors. The remaining insulator material mechanically interlocks the sectors. In other embodiments, the commutator assembly (100) is formed by soldering a carbon cylinder (142) to conductor sections (102) before overmolding a hub (112) and cutting slots (108) to isolate commutator sectors (106).

In one embodiment, the seat bottom (12) and seat back (14) are formed from a blow molded frame (16) including side walls (18) extending generally upwardly from a bottom panel (20). A support mat (32) comprising fabric/rubber webbing extends across a central cut-out region (28) in the bottom panel (20) and supports an inflatable cushion (48) comprising a series of air cells (50). An extensible upholstery or trim cover layer (56) covers the inflatable cushion (48) and is joined to the frame (16). In a second embodiment, the seat bottom (12) and seat back (14) are formed from a blow molded shell (62). An intermediate layer (64) of plastics material is provided on the shell (62) beneath an upholstery layer (68). An opening in the shell (62) allows the intermediate layer (64) to be expanded outwardly from the shell (62) as the pressure within the shell (62) is increased.
