    • 635,625. Electric welding. MARTIN, H., and SLATER, I. G. May 1, 1947, No. 11762. [Class 83 (iv)] In arc welding aluminium, magnesium, alloy, &c., studs 4 to light metal plates 5, the stud tips 45 are provided with metal or chemical fluxes. Zinc, lead or cadmium may be applied by metallization, or in disc, washer or insert form, to a spigoted or coned stud. The chemical flux comprises for example 50 to 60 per cent potassium chloride ; 10 to 20 per cent sodium chloride ; 20 to 30 per cent lithium fluoride and may be compacted in an annular recess 47 about the spigot 46 or secured by wrappings or adhesive. The stud is preferably used with a condenser &c. timer system that gives a preheat period before arcing, and a period of reduced current before contacting stud and plate to eliminate a chilled fillet, in conjunction with a refractory ferrule 49. In a modification the work may be metal fluxed, and a ferrule is not employed so that the upset fillet may be chipped off. A chemical flux for example contains 30 per cent lithium chloride, 20 per cent potassium chloride, 20 per cent calcium fluoride and 10 per cent manganese chloride and is used in welding a 5 per cent magnesium aluminium alloy. 0.5 to 7 per cent sodium fluoride may be added. The apparatus and electrical control system are as described in Specification 636,343.
