摘要： A method and apparatus coordinate creation and destruction of a shared object in a distributed system. An owner process creates the shared object and each other process in the system makes a local copy of the object. When a local process has a reference to the shared object, each other process is informed of the local reference. Only the owner process can destroy the object. When the owner process determines that there are no other processes, including itself, which have a reference to the shared object, the owner process decides to destroy the object. Prior to destroying the object, however, the owner process inquires of each other process as to whether it is permissible to destroy the object. If a process does not have a local reference to the object, the process will give the owner process permission to destroy the object. When, on the other hand, the process has a local reference to the object, the process will tell the owner process not to destroy the object. This confirmation of destruction prevents the invalid destruction of shared objects in the distributed system.

摘要： A packet of data is received from a LAN and transmitted over a WAN, by retaining the native LAN frame format of the packet during transmission across the WAN. Thus, LAN data may be transmitted over a SONET point-to-point link within a WAN network without the interim steps of creating ATM cells or other WAN transport packaging protocols. Instead, the LAN data may be transmitted directly over the SONET link as raw data, and reconstructed directly at the receiving end of the SONET link. A first buffer stores data from the LAN so that a corresponding packet size may be determined, and a second buffer stores data from the WAN to account for any speed difference between the LAN circuitry and WAN circuitry.

摘要： A network management system includes a user interface, a virtual network and a device communication manager. The virtual network includes models which represent network entities and model relations which represent relations between network entities. Each model includes network data relating to a corresponding network entity and one or more inference handlers for processing the network data to provide user information. The system performs a fault isolation technique wherein the fault status of a network device is suppressed when it is determined that the device is not defective. User displays include hierarchical location views and topological views of the network configuration. Network devices are represented on the displays by multifunction icons which permit the user to select additional displays showing detailed information regarding different aspects of the corresponding network device.
