摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a differential gear and a power transmission device which rapidly responds to engagement and disengagement between a vehicle power transmission device and vehicle, and reduces cost. SOLUTION: This differential gear 14 comprises a first, second, third structures, a differential gear set, and a bias mechanism. The first structure rotates around a differential shaft depending on a rotational input. The second structure is held to rotate around a differential axis. The third structure is held to rotate around the differential axis and is placed between the first and second structures. The third structure operates in an engaged state for transmitting a torque from the first structure and the second structure and in a disengaged state for inhibiting a transmission of the torque from the first structure to the second structure. The differential gear is connected to the second structure and is held to be rotational in the second structure. The bias mechanism gives a bias to the third structure in the disengaged state. The third structure is positioned in the engaged state when an amount of torsion of the rotation input exceeds that of a rotation force exerted through the differential gear set by a given amount.

SOLUTION: A differential device case 40 has a drum 50 provided with a radial direction flange 50a having an aligned installing hole 54. The drum 50 has a plurality of axial direction holes which are communicated with each other and which are communicated with a center chamber 62, namely, has gear pockets 64, 66. The gear pockets 64, 66 are arranged in a circumferential direction in parallel with a rotary axis of a case 40 with set. For reducing abrasion between teeth of a pinion gear and a wall surface corresponding to the gear pockets 64, 66, a plurality of hardening tracks 80 are formed in the gear pockets 64, 66. The hardening tracks 80 extend in parallel with each other in a longitudinal direction for instance.

The pair of opposite slender edge portions 154 have a dimension between the edge portions 154 slightly larger than the outer diameters of a pair of side gears, to permit approach with the angle of the side gear to the chamber, and subsequent matching to an axial line in a longitudinal direction. The pair of opposite circular edge portions have radiuses slightly larger than the radiuses of a pair of pinion gears, to permit the approach of the pinion gears into the chamber, and the subsequent matching to another axial line in the longitudinal direction. Thus, the gear constitution part of the differential case 112 can be simply assembled by the assembly window 122a, to improve structural and functional characteristics in one side.

SOLUTION: The differential limiting device comprises a case 40; a pair of pinion gears 42; a pair of side gears 45 and 46; and an electrically operable coupling including magnetic response fluid. The coupling selectively connects one of the side gears 45 and 46 and the case 40 drivably. In an embodiment, the differential limiting device includes a rotor 50 positioned in a state to make contact with magnetic viscous fluid and having a plurality of blades 76 extending to the outside. An electromagnet 52 is selectively started and the viscosity of magnetic viscous fluid is changed. In this way, the differential device can be functioned as a (released) differential limiting device, a (locked) differential limiting device, or a differential limiting device coping with a slip limit condition.
