摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system for registering an orthopedic implant in a computer assisted navigation system. SOLUTION: The system includes a plurality of differently sized implants which are the femoral component or hip stem of a prosthetic hip joint. A registration device can be engaged with each of the implants in a predefined relative position. The registration device also includes at least one reference element registerable in the computer assisted navigation system. A second reference structure having at least one reference element registerable in the computer assisted navigation system is detachably secured to the implant. Since the relative positions of the reference elements located on the registration device and the second reference structure differ for each of the plurality of implants, the navigation system can determine the nominal size of the implant. SOLUTION: The surgical instrument 20 includes at least one reference element 70 registerable in the navigation system disposed on a mounting assembly 40. The mounting assembly 40 is rotatably mounted on the surgical instrument 20 and includes a counterweight 50 or other anti-rotation feature and the reference element 70 may be maintained in a desired attitude. A rotatable shaft 22 may extend through the mounting assembly 40 and have one end 26 which is securable to a rotary driver 44 such as a drill and a second end 30 securable to a rotary tool 72 such as a reamer. The second end 30 of the shaft 22 utilizes a collet assembly 80 to firmly grasp the driven tool and limits relative movement of the rotary tool 72 and the reference elements 70 disposed on the mounting assembly 40. The reference member 550 is supported to the stem-like orthopedic implant 100 in the known fixed relationship so that the surgical navigation system detects the position and the attitude of the reference member 550 and finds the position and the attitude of the stem-like orthopedic implant 100 from the known relationship between the reference member 550 and the stem-shaped orthopedic implant 100 to determine the relative position and attitude of the stem-like orthopedic implant 550 to the bone.
