    • An apparatus including an image pick-up device, a data storage controlling arrangement, a main memory, a mass storage device, and a manipulation size setting unit. The image pick-up device picks up images to produce image data and stores the same into a frame buffer. The main memory offers rapid access but low storage capacity and stores the image data supplied from the frame buffer. The mass storage device is capable of holding a vast amount of memory but cannot be accessed very quickly. It also stores the image data supplied from the frame buffer. The manipulation size setting unit sets a mask region and a frame rate both of which are necessary for storing the image data into the mass storage device. The data storage controlling arrangement controls storage of the image data, in which the image data is stored in the mass storage device when the same is capable of storing the image data at an inherent frame rate larger than or equal to the set frame rate, and in which the image data is stored in the main memory when the inherent frame rate is smaller than the set frame rate.

    • A random-number generator generates first and second title keys on the basis of random numbers. A first DES encryption circuit for the title encrypts input data with the first title key. Initial values of this item of input data are a data identifier (ID) and program clock reference (PCR) that are extracted from a packet header. After completing the encryption of the initial values, a result of an encryption by a second DES encryption circuit for title serves as the input data for the first DES encryption circuit for title. The second DES encryption circuit for title encrypts a value of result of the encryption by the first DES encryption circuit for title with the second title key. An exclusive OR circuit outputs an exclusive OR of the data stored in the packet and a value of result of the encryption by the second DES encryption circuit for title. This exclusive OR turns out encrypted data.

    • A receiver including: a data regeneration mechanism that receives and regenerates data transmitted in units of a packet; a storage device in which received data is stored; a packet ID extraction unit that extracts a packet ID indicating a packet to be re-received; and a retransmission request unit that transmits retransmission request information, which requests retransmission of a packet to be re-received, to a transmitter. The transmitter retransmits only a packet, which is identified with a packet ID specified in the retransmission request information sent from the receiver, to the receiver. The receiver overwrites data, which is stored in the storage device, with data contained in a packet retransmitted from the transmitter. There is thus provided a recovery system for restoring data, which is preserved in the storage device, while regenerating data without stopping a motion picture irrespective of whether a lost packet is present.
