    • The converter casing includes a hollow cylindrical body in which a monolithic catalyst substrate is supported by a wire-mesh cushioning element. Secured to the casing body are a pair of holding fixtures which are each fitted with an end cushioning element engageable with the adjacent end face of the catalyst substrate to hold the latter against axial displacement. The casing body includes a smaller-diameter portion, at least one larger-diameter portion and a sloped shoulder portion interposed therebetween. The holding fixtures are fixed to the larger-diameter or other end portions of the casing body in spaced relation to the cushioning element held between the catalyst substrate and the casing body. Such casing structure reduces the danger of the catalyst substrate being damaged or broken under vibration or shock to a minimum thereby to enhance the durability of the substrate and enables realization of a particularly compact and inexpensive catalytic converter.

    • A hydraulic damper comprising a tube with a bottom end thereof closed for containing hydraulic oil therein, a piston slidably fitted in the tube and partitioning the tube into upper and lower chambers which are filled with oil, a piston rod having one end thereof being secured to the piston by a hollow nut having a cavity opening to the lower chamber therein which is located on the side of lower chamber and the other end thereof projecting to the outside through a rod guide and sealing member which are fixed to the upper end of the tube and which seal the upper end of the tube, a pressurized gas chamber provided on the side of the lower chamber for compensating the changed volume of the piston rod within the tube, a first communicating path provided in the piston for communicating the upper and lower chambers, a second communicating path which serves to communicate the upper and lower chambers via the cavity provided in the hollow nut and which is provided in the piston rod on the side of the piston and the hollow nut, valves provided in the first and second communicating paths and serving to open in the opposite directions and serve to close or open the first and second communicating paths, whereby the damping force is generated when the oil filled into the tube flows from the upper chamber to the lower chamber and vice versa.

    • A hydraulic damper includes a cylinder, a piston slidably disposed in the cylinder and partitioning the interior of the cylinder into first and second oil chambers, a rod secured to the piston and extending through the first chamber to the outside, and a damping force generating valve mechanism provided in the cylinder and at one end of the second oil chamber. The valve mechanism comprises a bottom member defining an annular valve seat thereon, a flexible valve disc cooperating with the valve seat, and a novel generally tubular valve guide. The valve guide has a plurality of large and small diameter portions formed integrally and alternately along the circumference thereof, the inner circumference of the small diameter portions defining guide surfaces for guiding the outer circumference of the valve disc and axial passages along the outer circumference thereof, and the large diameter portions defining axial passages along the inner circumference thereof and which passages communicate with the first mentioned axial passages through cut-outs formed between the large and small diameter portions.
