    • Recording/reproducing apparatus including recording electronics and playback electronics and a radio receiver responsive to a selected television signal for supplying a composite video signal to the recording electronics at selected times are contained within a unitary package designed to rest on a surface. A video camera supplies composite video signal for selective application to the recording electronics at other times, the supplying of those composite video signals to said recording electronics being done by means other than cabling from the video camera to the unitary package. The video camera is included within the same unitary package as the magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus in some systems, thus to eliminate cabling from the video camera to the unitary package. In other systems designed for photorecording without the need for an operator to attend the camera, the video camera is included with a low-power radio transmitter in a separate package from the unitary package including the magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus and the radio receiver. The low-power radio transmitter is designed to transmit the composite video signal from the video camera by wireless link to the radio receiver within the same unitary package as the magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus, thereafter to be recorded.

    • An NTSC television signal transmitter also transmits through the same transmission channel a suppressed data carrier having a frequency differing from that of video carrier, having a symbol rate that is a multiple of horizontal scanning rate of video signal, having data frames occurring at a data frame rate that is the same as the video frame rate, and transmitting the symbols transmitted in each of alternate data frames in opposite phase during the next data frame. The data carrier has no image on the other side of the video carrier and preferably its modulation spectrum overlaps the video carrier. A digital-signal receiver can recover data from such a data carrier buried in an NTSC television signal, using frame-comb filtering to separate data from interfering video signal.

The symbol precoding of the input symbol stream results from differential delay and first linear combination of the differentially delayed terms. The postcoding of the symbol stream recovered by data slicing results from second linear combination of the symbol stream with delayed result of the second linear combination, and is performed in accordance with a modular arithmetic. One of the first and second linear combinations is subtractive, and the other is additive. The results of the second linear combination are the corrected symbol decoding results.

A phase tracker, operative on narrow-bandpass filtered portions of the digitized final intermediate frequency signal centering on its carrier frequency, suppresses an imaginary portion of the final intermediate-frequency signal, arising from multipath distortion or from phase incoherency in local oscillations used during frequency conversion. A digital controlled oscillator in the phase tracker supplies digital descriptions of the carrier wave for the final intermediate-frequency signal to a synchronous detector, which synchronous detector detects the real portion of the digitized final intermediate-frequency signal in accordance with those digital descriptions of the carrier wave pair of all-pass digital filters, which exhibit a constant .pi./2 difference in phase response for the digitized bandpass signals and are designed based on Jacobian elliptic functions as described by C. M. Rader, are used in the phase tracker for generating the real and imaginary portions of the digitized final intermediate-frequency signal.

    • A memory system for a television receiver is disclosed. The memory system contains an array of addressable memory cells, each row of which can contain one line of sampled video signals. The number of rows in the array is greater than the number of lines in a frame. Apparatus is included in the memory system for simultaneously writing more than one line of samples into the memory, for simultaneously reading more than one line of samples from the memory, or for both. Simultaneous access to multiple lines allows the reading and writing of multiple corresponding lines of samples from both the current and the prior frame. The row addresses that are used to store the lines of samples for a frame are not the same for each frame, rather the lines of each new frame are stored in rows with lesser addresses than the rows used for the prior frame. This introduces a backward scrolling of the stored image from frame to frame which avoids overwriting data to be used in time-domain or spatial-domain filtering done directly from memory.
