    • A thin projection type image display device with a low chin height includes a cabinet, a screen, a projection optical system, an optical path changing unit, and a reflecting unit. The screen is disposed on a front side of the cabinet. The projection optical system enlarges and projects an image formed by a display element, and the optical path changing unit is disposed on the bottom of the cabinet to reflect the image enlarged and projected by the projection optical system. The reflection unit is disposed obliquely to the screen and below the screen to reflect the image reflected by the optical path changing unit toward the screen. The projection optical system is disposed in a space above a horizontal plane perpendicular to the screen, behind the front side of the cabinet, and below an optical path of light incident on a bottom of the screen.

An illuminating block provides light to the DMD in a uniform optical intensity. A projecting block projects the light reflected from the DMD onto a screen. The projection TV features a projection aperture positioned in the projecting block or the illuminating block arranged perpendicularly to an optical axis. The projection aperture forms an optical path and includes projection areas to pass the light and blocking areas to block the light. The projection area and the blocking area are formed on a cross section of the light with a predetermined space.

    • An optical disc can increase an information storage capacity by reducing the track width of the optical disc. An optical pickup for a narrow track optical disc includes an optical shielding portion having a desired light intensity distribution with respect to a target track and the tracks adjacent to the target track on the optical disc. The optical shielding portion is disposed on the optical path between the light source and the optical disc and shields part of the light beam proceeding toward the optical disc, to provide a light intensity distribution such that only the beam spot focused on the target track is used to detect information stored in the target track. Thus, the beam spot focused on the target track of the optical disc has track crosstalk having a magnitude by which information can be read from the target track. The optical pickup can provide an excellent performance even in the case that the optical pickup is adapted in a high-definition DVD to be commercialized in the future.
