摘要： In a display device and a display driver, when a grayscale of a display image is equal to or lower than a specific grayscale value obtained from a histogram of the display image, a display grayscale is extended with a linear function. On the other hand, when a grayscale of a display image is equal to or higher than the specific grayscale value, histogram equalization of a part higher than the specific grayscale value is performed, and the display grayscale is extended with a non-linear function obtained from the histogram equalization.

摘要： A display driver driving a display panel according to inputted display data comprises: a first circuit changing brightness of a display image by conversion of the display data based on a first reference value and a second reference value, the first reference value being a display data value at a first position in an upper part of a histogram of the inputted display data, and the second reference value being a display data value at a second position in a lower portion of the histogram; a second circuit changing brightness of a illuminating device illuminating the display panel based on the first reference value; and a control circuit performing a processing of making the brightness of the display image high by the first circuit and a processing of making the brightness of the illuminating device low by the second circuit in correlation with the brightness of the display image.

摘要： The display driver achieves the balance between the image quality and power-cutting ratio by controlling the backlight dimming ratio to keep the image quality after backlight dimming constant. The display driver uses e.g. MSE (Mean Square Error) as an index of image quality. The reference gradation control unit controls the data decompression and backlight dimming ratios, thereby to keep the image quality after backlight dimming constant. Assuming display data decompression, and backlight dimming, the error calculating unit calculates a decrease of luminance for an input displayed image as MSE based on the decompression and dimming ratios of a preceding frame, in advance. In the case of MSE over a predetermined value, the decompression unit and light-adjustment control unit decrease the decompression and dimming ratios to below those of the preceding frame, respectively. In the case of MSE below the value, the ratios are lowered to below those of the preceding frame.

摘要： A liquid crystal driver of liquid crystal display device in which a plurality of expansion/contraction ratios of display data, for example, two kinds of expansion/contraction ratios can be set in a register is provided. Further, the two kinds of expansion/contraction ratios are applicable respectively in two kinds of areas (still-image and video-image) whose coordinates are previously set in a liquid crystal panel. As a result, it is possible to make the still-image area and the video-image area have different expansion/contraction ratios of pixel value respectively. In this manner, it is possible to make display brightness high only in the video-image area, thereby realizing both lower power consumption and visibility improvement at the same time.
