    • A map display method whereby the contents of a road map displayed can be easily and clearly grasped regardless of the running conditions of a vehicle.In a summarized map displayed on a display screen 10, an area including a vehicle position 11, a destination 13 and a guide route 12 between them is displayed in simplified fashion. At a position far from the destination, as shown in FIG. 2A, a summarized map of a wide area is displayed and objects including a road 14 and a facility 15 are limited to a greater degree. With the approach of the vehicle position 11 to the destination 13, as shown in FIG. 2B, the contraction scale is decreased and a summarized map of a middle area is displayed, while at the same time increasing the objects displayed. With a further approach of the vehicle position 11 to the destination 13, as shown in FIG. 2C, a narrower area is displayed in summarization, while at the same time displaying substantially all the objects, thereby making it possible to grasp the neighborhood of the destination 13 in detail.

    • A method for processing data performed in a data processing system having a storage unit is provided which includes: creating a spatial index comprising a leaf containing location information and attribute information with respect to a plurality of objects to be searched, and storing the spatial index in the storage unit; and referring to the spatial index stored in the storage unit in response to an input of a search request including location information and attribute information for searching the object to be searched, and extracting the object to be searched that agrees with the search request. With this configuration, a spatial search with subsidiary condition search can be processed at high speed, without merging results of both searches.

    • According to the present invention, the highly accurate control can be realized in a system for performing the driving control of a vehicle using map data. A car information system 10 for controlling a driving control unit group 50 is located in a vehicle so that the driving control of the vehicle is performed. The car information system includes, a map DB 100 for storing map data, a support area management table 110 in which each kind of attribute data of the map data is associated with information for identifying a field-researched area (support area), and a control unit 200 for estimating an area through which the vehicle travels. The control unit uses a support area management table 110 to judge whether or not attribute data included in the estimated area is associated with the support area. If it is judged that the attribute data is associated with the support area, the control unit performs the driving control of the vehicle by use of the map data, whereas if it is judged that the attribute data is not associated with the support area, not performing the driving control of the vehicle by use of the map data.

The partial updating data and differential updating data required for updating of the designated region of the terminal are selected from the information obtained above and these selected data are applied to the map data of terminal. When updating is conducted using the partial updating data and differential updating data, the time and date of updating of the relevant partial update region ID are changed and the differential updating data ID is registered to the differential management data.
