    • A method for sensing and analyzing topographic properties of an aspheric test element is disclosed. The principle of the measurement technique is to immerse the element under test into a container filled with liquid crystal. A polarized plane wave passes through front and back precisely processed glass plates of the container sandwiched between a polarizer and an analyzer. The two side plates are not transited by the plane wave of light but are deposited with conductive layers in order to generate an electrical field between them. This DC (direct current) external electrical field is supplied to help to align the molecular direction of the liquid crystal. In a thus-induced desired configuration, the molecular direction of liquid crystal is aligned to be perpendicular to the incident plane wave front. As the plane light wave propagates through the liquid crystal in the container, it will be divided into ordinary and extraordinary beams. These two beams will create interference behind the analyzer. In the presence of the aspheric optical element under test, which is not a uniaxial crystal, a compensatory interferogram will be formed. Analysis of the interferogram will allow the user to determine the topographic surface profile of the aspheric element under test.

    • In present invention, a photonic integrated circuit includes a number of optical coupling ports that extend from the surface of the device through at least a dedicated fibre guiding layer or a planar structure for coupling the end of an optical fibre mounted within the optical coupling port to an underlying planar optical wave guide or other light emitting device so that, in use, light is coupled between the underlying optical wave guide or light emitting device and the optical fibre. The other and of the optical fibre may be coupled to an optical fibre holder or to another optical coupling port. An important advantage of the present invention is the flexibility it gives to a designer since it eliminates the need to for waveguides to be routed to the edge of the chip. It also solves the problem of aligning a large number of fibres onto a chip since the optical coupling ports allow fibres to be passively aligned.

    • A wavelength locked tunable laser source comprising a tunable laser source, an optical reference source characterized by a frequency spectrum with two combs of discrete components of different spacing, an optical mixing device and feedback control circuitry. An optical output of the laser source is heterodyned with an output of the optical reference source at the optical mixing device to produce an electrical signal in dependence on a difference beat frequency of the two optical outputs, the feedback control circuitry being operative to process the electrical signal to provide a feedback signal which is used to tune the wavelength of the laser source so as to minimize the beat frequency and thereby substantially lock the wavelength of the laser source to a wavelength in the spectrum of the optical reference source. The use of an optical reference source with a spectrum comprising two frequency combs provides a mechanism for determining the absolute frequency to which the laser has been locked.
