    • An intake device for outboard motors, which makes it possible to improve intake performance and reduce the size of the device at the same time. Cylinder banks have a plurality of cylinder bores arranged in a vertical direction, and extend rearward to form a V shape. Intake ports of the respective cylinder bores are formed in the cylinder banks to open in the inner sides of the V shape. An intake manifold is connected to the intake ports. A surge tank is connected to the intake manifold. A throttle body is connected to the surge tank. The surge tank comprises a plurality of intake passage members connected to the respective cylinder bores via the intake manifold, wall members provided between respective adjacent ones of the intake passage members, and a lid member configured to hermetically close a space defined by the intake passage members and the wall members.

    • A shift system for outboard motors, which is reduced in size, and is capable securing compatibility with an outboard motor of a type for which the shift operation is manually performed using a shift cable. A motor-driven shift actuator is disposed at a location forward of and to the right of an engine within an engine cover covering the engine. A clutch motor is provided for the actuator and disposed at a location rearward thereof, with a motor output shaft disposed in a manner extending forward, and is operated in response to the detected vessel operator's shift. An actuator output shaft is disposed at a location forward of the clutch motor and extends downward from a front part of the actuator. The actuator output shaft rotates in accordance with rotation of the motor output shaft. A clutch shaft is disposed below the actuator and rearward of the actuator output shaft. A first linkage is disposed on the right side of the actuator, as viewed in plan view, and connects between the actuator output shaft and the clutch shaft.

    • A lubricating system for an outboard motor equipped with a vertical type engine. In one embodiment, the lubricating system has an oil pump positioned near the bottom of the engine, the oil pump driven by an oil pump rotor that is positioned at a connection between the crankshaft and an engine drive-shaft, the oil pump rotor being linked to the crankshaft. The system further includes a camshaft-driving mechanism for transmitting the rotation of the crankshaft to a propulsion device. The camshaft-driving mechanism is also positioned at the connection between the crankshaft and the drive-shaft and is also linked to the crankshaft. The lubrication system also has a main oil tank for storing lubricating oil circulated by the oil pump, and an engine-cooling water passageway positioned next to the main oil tank. Another element of this embodiment of the lubricating system is a filter-mounting base positioned on an outer wall of the cylinder blocks. The system also has oil passageways positioned at the bottom of the cylinder blocks for distributing the oil.

    • An intake system of an outboard motor including a vertically arranged V-type engine comprises, an intake manifold connected to the intake ports, a surge tank connected to the intake manifold and disposed at a rear side from a central portion of the engine, a throttle body provided with a throttle valve, a plurality of intake passages for high revolution operation of the engine. The intake passages for high revolution operation extend from the surge tank and are communicated with the intake manifold, and the intake passages for low/intermediate revolution operation extend from the surge tank and are joined with the intake passages for high revolution operation, respectively. Each of the intake passages for low/intermediate revolution operation has a length longer than that for high revolution operation. A valve open/close mechanism is also disposed for opening/closing all at once portions upstream side of the joined portions of both the intake passages of the engine.
