    • A sorting apparatus is composed of sort processors connected in a pipeline fashion. Each sort processor 106 merge sorts data from the preceding sort processor and then outputs the merge sort result to the succeeding sort processor. The sort processor includes sort core portions and a front end internal storage and a back end internal storage for the respective sort core portions. Outside the sort processors, there are added external memories for the respective sort core portions. The front and back end internal storages and the external memories constitute a local memory. The sort core portions use, when a faulty area is found in the local memory, part of the front end and back end internal storages as an alternative memory.

    • A sheet feeding apparatus detects the position of a sheet (30) during feeding thereof and calculates a deviation of the detected sheet position relative to a reference position to thereby enable accurate color printing. A follower roller (41) for detecting a feeding amount of the sheet is in contact with the sheet which is fed by a sheet feeding roller 1, so that is rotated in accordance with the movement of the sheet. A sensor (43) generates an output signal each time the follower roller (41) rotates a predetermined angle of rotation. In one form of the invention, a timing deviation detector (51) is provided for detecting a deviation in the output timing of an output signal of the sensor relative to a reference value. In another form, a rotation angle deviation detector is provided for detecting a deviation in the rotation angle of the sheet feeding roller relative to a reference value each time the sensor generates an output signal. A feeding amount deviation calculator (52) periodically calculates a deviation in the amount of feeding of the sheet relative to a reference feeding amount based on the deviation in the output timing of the sensor output signal of based on the deviation in the rotation angle of the sheet feeding roller each time the follower roller rotates a predetermined rotation angle.

    • A method and apparatus for controlling a hardware merge sorter to sort N.gtoreq.2.sup.n number of records, the hardware merge sorter including a plurality of local processors that are cascaded in series, a plurality of local memories and a plurality of selectors. Each selector is coupled to and between one of the plurality of local memories and a respective local processor and couples the local memory to the respective processor during a first sorting step. In addition, the plurality of local memories are coupled to one local processor, of the plurality of local processors, during a second sorting step. With this arrangement, the hardware merge sorter can sort a plurality N.ltoreq.2.sup.n+1 number of records. In one particular embodiment of the present invention, a plurality of hardware merge sorter cells are cascaded in series. With this arrangement, the hardware merge sorter can sort a plurality N.ltoreq.2.sup.n+2 number of records.
