摘要： A novel cyclobutenedione derivative prepared in accordance with the following reaction formula, a process for the preparation thereof, and a nonlinear optical element comprising such a derivative are provided: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each represents an alkyl group, an alkenyl group or an alkynyl group; R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 each represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group or an alkynyl group; and C.sup.* represents an asymmetric carbon atom, with the proviso that R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and the nitrogen atom to which they are connected may form a cyclic structure larger than 3-membered ring, R.sup.1 and R.sup.3, and R.sup.2 and R.sup.4 each may be connected to each other to form a methylene chain --(CH.sub.2).sub.n -, and the hydrogen atoms in R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 may be substituted by halogen atom, alkyloxy group or cyano group.

摘要： The present invention provides a novel chemical substance suitable for practical organic nonlinear optical element having a high nonlinear optical effect, a process for the preparation thereof, and a nonlinear optical element prepared from such a chemical substance. The method includes the step of coating the solution of the dye compound on a substrate: where R1 and R2 may be identical or different from each other and each represents, respectively, a linear alkyl group or a branched alkyl group, the dye thin film having high thermal stability, having intense absorption at approximately 1.3 μm and having ultrafast response characteristic.
