    • A catalytic converter for purifying exhaust gas discharged from an automotive internal combustion engine. The catalytic converter comprises a casing in which a monolithic catalyst carrier is disposed. An annular cap is fixedly disposed inside the casing and located generally coaxial with the monolithic catalyst carrier. The annular cap is located near an end face of the monolithic catalyst carrier. The cap includes annular bottom, inner and outer walls. The inner and outer walls are separate from each other and extend from the bottom wall. The inner wall is located radially inward of the outer wall. The bottom, inner and outer walls are arranged generally U-shaped in cross-section so as to form a groove. Additionally, an annular elastic washer is coaxially disposed within the groove of the annular cap. The elastic washer is disposed in press contact with the end face of the monolithic catalyst carrier to axially elastically support the monolithic catalyst carrier. The annular elastic washer is an annular molded structure of wire mesh. The annular elastic washer has an inner peripheral face which has a diameter larger than a diameter of an outer peripheral surface of the inner wall of the cap so as to form a clearance between the elastic washer and the inner wall of the cap in a state where the elastic washer is assembled in the casing upon being compressed.

    • For resiliently and safely supporting a monolith in a housing, a supporting structure is proposed. An annular seat structure is defined in the housing. An annular resilient washer is made of wire mesh and is put on the annular seat structure for supporting thereon a circular peripheral edge of the monolith. A biasing structure biases the monolith toward the annular resilient washer to compress the washer. The washer has a generally rectangular cross section and has a chamfered surface around a circular outer surface thereof. The chamfered surface is positioned radially outside the circular peripheral edge of the monolith. With this, even when compressed by the monolith, the washer is prevented from producing a biasing force for pulling the circular peripheral edge of the monolith radially outward, and thus, damage of the edge is suppressed.

    • An exhaust emission control device includes an adsorbent trapper having an adsorbent for adsorbing and desorbing hydrocarbon in exhaust gas, a catalytic converter, a main exhaust gas passage with a first valve, a bypass exhaust gas passage with a second valve and a control unit. The bypass exhaust gas passage bypassing the first valve is connected with the adsorbent. The control unit controls the first and second valves to desorb the hydrocarbon from the adsorbent when a condition is satisfied. The condition is that the catalyst converter is in active, an oxygen adsorption amount of the catalyst converter is not less than a first predetermined amount and an exhaust gas amount is not more than a second predetermined amount. The first valve is opened and the second valve is closed when the condition is not satisfied during desorption of the hydrocarbon from the adsorbent.
