    • 3077. Young, J. R., and Hunter, J. Feb. 8. Loom jacquards. - Relates to looms for weaving figured fabrics, in which the jacquard is provided with reciprocating frames such as f, f having crossbars e, e adapted to actuate the needles a to form the ground or part of the ground, while cards on the barrel d actuate the needles to produce the figuring or other part of the grounds, a reduction in the number of cards employed being thereby effected. The card barrel d is actuated by a rod connected to a bell-crank lever L provided with a pin j, which is adapted to be engaged by a double hook J pivoted on a pull-rod K. The hook J is normally held in the position shown by a wire m connected to a spring-controlled lever M, but when a cord n from the jacquard is pulled, the hook J is moved by a spring O to engage the pin j, and the card barrel is moved against the needles a, the rod K being acted upon by a crank, eccentric, or the like. When in the position shown, the hook J engages a pin i on a bell-crank lever I, to which is pivoted an arm H having a double hook h. This hook is adapted to engage one of two pins g, g on extensions of the frames f, f respectively, according as a pendent rod P is tilted by a jacquard cordp, or is untilted, so that, when the card barrel is not being operated, one of the frames f, f is moved to the left against the action of a spring f , and its bars c or e disengage alternate uprights b from the griff-knives c. Usually between each two movements of the card barrel a movement of one of the frames f, f occurs, and the frames are moved alternately, but if no figuring is to be produced, or if the figuring is produced at intervals alternating with the ground, the cards control the ground shedding alternately with the bars of the frames. The uprights b may be coupled to the needles in pairs of rows as shown, or to single needle?, in which case the number of cross-bars e, e is doubled. In split harness and leno or like work, the hook h may be arranged to engage both ping g, g simultaneously, the rcd P being dispensed with.

    • 8651. Morris, O., Groutage, J., and Hunter, J. April 13. Mowing-machines. - The main frame 1 is supported on the wheels 3, 3, and is fitted with two depending arms 24 and 25 which carry the main shoe 26 in which the finger-bar is pivoted. The knife-bar is connected by a special form of link to one end of a bell-crank lever 37, the opposite end of which is connected by a rod 15 having at its end a special block 16 by means of which it is connected to the pin 13 of the crank disc 12 driven by the gearing shown from the axle of the main wheels. The arm 24 and the main shoe 26 are braced by rods 47 and 48 from a lever 45 pivoted on the pole. The said block 16 is shown in detail in Fig. 4. One end of the block is split and recessed to form a bearing for the ball head of the crank-pin 13. The split ends are held in engagement with the crank-pin by means of bolts 23, 23. The opposite end of the block 16 is formed with a seating for the rod 15. Concave recesses 20, 20 are formed at each end of the said seating, and similar-shaped nuts are employed to fix the rod 15 in such a way that it is free to rotate in the said seating.
