    • A housing contains a diffusion indicator tube provided with a predetermined breaking point and the housing has an upper part and a lower part joined together by a film hinge. To open the inserted diffusion indicator tube its predetermined breaking point is positioned opposite the film hinge. By bending the housing parts, the break-off end breaks off the test tube at the predetermined breaking point, thereby opening the reaction section. The parts of the test tube are removed, and then the reaction section is pushed into the upper part, now with its closed end first, whereupon it is snapped into the lower part. Its opening at the bottom shoulder of the lower part is exposed to the ambient atmosphere which diffuses into it. In the presence of the gas to be monitored there will be discoloration due to reaction. The discoloration can be observed continuously through the open side of the holding means.

    • A breathing alcohol testing device comprises a tube for blowing expiration air therethrough which has a first air entrance end and an opposite second end with means for accommodating a testing tube containing a gas detection substance. A pump is connected to the tube for moving expiration air through the tube and pressure sensing means are associated with the tube for sensing the pressure adjacent the entrance end for regulating the pump in accordance with the sensed pressure. In addition to the sensing of pressure, velocity may also be sensed and a control device is connected between the sensors and the pump so as to regulate the pump to start after the tube is engaged in a person's mouth and he begins expiring his breath into the tube and a certain pressure is generated at a certain velocity. The pump may be provided directly in the line ahead of the gas testing device for forcing the breathing air through the tube and through the testing device or it may be provided downstream of the testing device. When the pump is located downstream of the testing device the tube is provided with an additional socket having a valve regulation for admitting air into the tube in accordance with the sensed pressure conditions and velocity conditions in the operation of the pump.

    • A portable explosion-proof gas detection device, comprises a housing which defines an interior flameproof motor chamber with an electric motor in the chamber having a pump drive shaft which extends outwardly into a pump chamber having a rotor connected to the electric motor shaft. The rotor engages a hose connection which is arranged in an openable chamber and which is engaged by a rotor over a pump squeezing surface defined the housing surrounding wall. The hose is connected through a twin fitting to a holder for a testing tube which has an opening at each end is positionable in a tube holder so that its open end is oriented in an opening in the housing for the inflow of air through the tube and through the pump for discharge out of the housing. The apparatus includes a control knob which actuates an electrical control circuit which is magnetically actuable by rotation of the knob to energize the electric motor from a battery source which is also arranged within the housing. The housing includes a cover which includes an end and a top wall portion which, when lifted upwardly, provides an access to the contact tube holder and also to the pump tube fitting to permit the replacement thereof, if necessary.

    • A device for checking the functioning of a gas measuring apparatus which includes a tubular connection for the passage of a gas so that it can be directed through a tube mounted in the connection which has means therein such as a chemical for measuring the gas which is passing therethrough. The device comprises a translucent diffusing screen mounted on the tubular connection so as to be able to view through the screen and into the gas passage and a spring diaphragm connected to the tube having a side disposed in space relationship to the screen and viewable through the screen and gas between the screen and the diaphragm when the diaphragm is flexed in one direction in respect to the screen so as to position it closer to the screen. The diaphragm is also flexed by a pressure variation within the tube and on the exterior of the diaphragm, for example when the pressure conditions within the tube are not as to be expected for normal functioning so as to move the diaphragm in an opposite direction away from the screen and to render the diaphragm invisible when viewed through the screen and the gas. The diaphragm is advantageously made of a distinct color so that its appearance or disappearance from view is readily apparent.
