    • A system and method for finding the position of a waveguide in a planar optical device that has application to the coupling of light to a planar optical waveguide without connectors. The system comprises input and output optical fiber probes, a light source, a photo or light detector and a optical power meter. The light detector is positioned at the exit of the optical waveguide of interest. Typically, the position of the waveguide will be known with some window of uncertainty. Assuming that the photo detector is a photodiode, the area of the photodiode is preferably large enough that the exit of the waveguide can be assumed to lie within the detection area of the photodiode. The input optical fiber probe is coupled to the light source and is moved across the uncertainty window of the entry to the waveguide. The light transmitted through the waveguide to the photo detector is measured and used to find the position of the entry to the way guide. The input fiber probe is then positioned at the entry to the waveguide. The output fiber probe is then coupled to the optical power meter and used to scan for the exit for the waveguide.

A fold line extends substantially transverse to the side edges and substantially bisecting them, and dividing the sheet into first and second portions. An adhesive pattern on the first face of the sheet, adjacent at least one of the first and second end edges, secures the first and second portions together adjacent the first and second end edges. An obscuring coating and a camouflage image are provided on the first face of the sheet. Variable indicia are printed on the obscuring coating, and are not legible when viewed by an observer who separates the first and second portions while the first and second portions remain secured together adjacent the first and second end edges. The obscuring coating may comprise a multi-layer, thermochromic coating. Alternatively, the obscuring coating may comprise a reflective coating.

    • A security document including layers of security coatings disposed on a substrate. The coating layers include a first security coating disposed on the substrate and a second security coating disposed on the first security coating. One of the security coatings is a solvent-sensitive coating, while the other is an abrasion-sensitive coating. Together, these coatings ensure that attempts at tampering with the document produce notorious indicia of such tampering. The security document is particularly adapted for ink jet printing. Additional security features may include thermochromic ink, bar codes, and pantographic warnings, as well as another solvent-sensitive security coating that is distinct from the earlier-described solvent-sensitive coating. By way of example, this second solvent-sensitive coating could be configured to be sensitive to particular forms of tampering, such as where solutions containing phosphoric acid are used to tamper with the document.
