    • A automated method, system and computer program for ordering print products by electronic mail. An e-mail request for business cards or other print products, such as postcards or calendars, is generated by a user of an e-mail system and sent to a management system including a management program which, in response, causes the system to selectively retrieve additional information associated with the e-mail request from one or more databases. The management system then prepares the business card order, or other print product order, using the retrieved information. The databases may be internet accessible directory services or other types of databases which the management system can look up using the originating e-mail address contained in the e-mail request in order to retrieve the additional information. The print product order can be prepared by importing the additional information, such as print product, shipping, billing and/or approval information, into one or more templates.

An installation application may automatically be loaded from a portable device onto a computer system when the portable device is connected to the computer system The computer system may automatically access a document service application on the portable device based on information contained in the installation application. One or more document service preferences may automatically be received from the portable device onto the computer system, and an electronic document may be selected. A database stored in the system computer includes a decision table having a rules set comprising at least one of customer cost rules, shop schedule rules, resource availability rules, and capacity rules. A method of establishing customer service level requirements for web based production print jobs includes uploading at least one digital file defining print job content from the user computer to the printer system computer via the Internet. At least one specification variable, selected from the number of copies to be printed, the print job cost, the print job quality, or the delivery date is selected. Print job production data correlating to the specification variable is computed and displayed and the print job is printed if the print job production data is acceptable.

A link from a product description to the processing instructions is made. A set of pre-defined templates containing specific processing instructions can be selected. Templates representing the processing instructions have a set of capabilities for the process network described. Templates representing the processing instructions can associate a set of well-defined queries regarding the product description, answers to which are used to complete process templates. A System of Classification when constructed can be used to classify a vocabulary to describe products and a separate vocabulary to describe required processing for the product(s). Once a System of Classification is established, templates for various product classes can be created. A heuristic engine can classify Product Descriptions into a product class in the System of Classification.

    • A system and method generate and select an optimal job plan in response to a user's job request. The system may be implemented with an orchestrator that includes a user interface, a job plan generation manager, a job plan selector, and a job plan manager. The user interface communicates with a requesting user to receive a job request, user location and preference data, and provide a user with job plan status data. The job plan generator generates the permutations of job plans for implementing the requested job. The job plan selector computes the job plan scores for each of the generated job plans and selects the one that corresponds to the best score for some criterion. Data regarding the selected job plan may be provided to the user interface for communication to the user. The job plan manager supervises the service sites in accordance with the selected job plan and provides status information to the user interface for communication to the user.
