    • The present invention pertains generally to a liquid control assembly wherein the assembly is useful in the placement of liquid dispersed at an angle, and more particularly, a nozzle assembly for directing thermal melt adhesive at an angle onto a desired target. The nozzle assembly includes a nozzle projection that exhibits a minimized effective radius and as such minimizes the temperature drop of the nozzle assembly with respect to the thermal melt extrusion head to which it is attached, thus retaining an operating temperature suitable for extrusion of thermal melt adhesives. The nozzle assembly further includes a two part inter-locking construction that allows for free axial rotation of the nozzle projection while retaining simplified assembly, maintenance, repair, and installation when used in conjunction with a thermal melt extrusion assembly.

    • An implantable artificial sphincter system provides long-term adjustment via transcutaneous energy transfer (TET), minimizing invasive adjustment through adding or removing fluid via a syringe. An infuser device provides bi-directional fluid transfer via a flexible conduit to a sphincter band, such as a gastric band, by a combination of thermodynamic actuation and a piezo-electrically disengaged drum brake assembly that thereby achieves a desirable small volume device. A propellant within a propellant cavity surrounds a metal bellows accumulator biased at body temperature to either expand or collapse the bellows accumulator with the opposite direction of movement effected by a thermal element that heats in combination with a negatively-biased propellant or cools in combination with a positively-biased propellant. A drum brake assembly locks the metal bellows accumulator in place between adjustments by thermodynamic actuation by activating piezo-electric stack actuators that disengage calipers from a brake drum attached to the bellows accumulator.

    • A method for aiding a surgical procedure, the method uses the steps of providing a surgical instrument with an elongated shaft having a distal end, a proximal end and a longitudinal axis therebetween, the distal end having an end effector attached thereto, the shaft having a first strip running along the longitudinal axis and attached to the end effector, and a second strip, parallel to the first strip, running along the longitudinal axis from the distal end of the shaft to the distal end of the end effector where it is attached thereto, the end effector comprising a plurality of spaced apart links disposed along the longitudinal axis between the distal end of the end effector the distal end of the shaft such that the strips run through the links, and each link is attached to at least one strip. The method also includes the steps of inserting the instrument to a desired location in a body and curving the instrument by moving the first strip proximally. The method also includes the steps of preventing the first strip from moving proximally beyond a predetermined amount and thereby causing the end effector to bend only up to a predetermined angle, and preventing the links from making contact with one another.

    • An implantable adjustable sphincter system is comprised of a band configured to encircle a portion of an anatomical passageway, a manual pump, a reservoir in fluid communication with the pump, and a valve assembly in fluid communication with the band and the manual pump. The valve assembly is comprised of a first configuration and a second configuration, and is operable to be manually switched between configurations. The first configuration only permits fluid to flow from the band toward the reservoir. The second configuration only permits fluid to flow from the reservoir toward the band. The manual pump is in fluid communication with the valve assembly and the reservoir, and is manually operable to transfer fluid between the reservoir and the band when the valve assembly is in the second configuration.
