    • Thermoplastic polymer compositions, films, containers, laminates and fibers can comprise a modified polymer. The said modified polymer having a moiety comprising a half-ester reaction product of cyclodextrin and metal and/or organic group covalently bonded to some portion of the half-acid moieties. The cyclodextrin compound, grafted to the polymer structure, can scavenge impurities, permeants, or other undesirable volatile contaminants. The cooperation between the modified polymer's carboxylic acidic groups, basic groups and grafted cyclodextrin can provide active barrier properties to a film, web, fiber or other polymer structure. A permeant or a contaminant can be complexed or trapped within the polymer and held within the film, web or fiber preventing the permeant from passing into the interior of a container, or the contaminant can be scavenged from the enclosed headspace or surrounding environment.

    • Thermoplastic polyolefin polymer compositions, polymer chips, fibers, woven or nonwoven fabrics, films, closures, and laminates include a polymer and cyclodextrin compound with a volatile maturation inhibitor or an olefinic ethylene receptor antagonist in respiring produce materials. The polymer composition can also include a cyclodextrin-modified polymer or a substituted cyclodextrin. Olefinic ethylene inhibitors can be formed in the cyclodextrin composition, wherein the cyclodextrin releases the olefinic inhibitor composition when used in produce packaging materials. Coating compositions can also be made. The inhibitor is introduced into the materials and is released under controlled conditions of humidity. Upon release, the olefinic inhibitor blocks ethylene receptor sites on proteins that control maturation and can produce an extended period during which the produce does not substantially complete maturation or ripening to a degree leading to spoilage.

    • A barrier film composition can comprise a thermoplastic web comprising a thermoplastic polymer and a dispersed cyclodextrin composition having substituents that compatibilize the cyclodextrin in the film. The thermoplastic/cyclodextrin film obtains substantial barrier properties from the interaction between the substituted cyclodextrin in the film material with a permeant. The substituents on the cyclodextrin molecule causes the cyclodextrin to be dispersible and stable in the film material resulting in an extrudable thermoplastic. Such materials can be used as a single layer film material, a multilayer film material which can be coated or uncoated and can be used in structural materials wherein the thermoplastic is of substantial thickness resulting in structural stiffness. The cooperation between the cyclodextrin and the thermoplastic polymer provides barrier properties to a web wherein a permeant can be complexed or entrapped by the cyclodextrin compound and held within the film preventing the permeant from passing through the film into the interior of a film, an enclosure or container. The permeant can comprise a variety of well known materials such as moisture, aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons, monomer materials, off flavors, toxic compounds etc.
