    • A network access scheme enhances channel utilization under the ALOHA protocol by making use of the FM capture effect. The resulting network access scheme allows a transmitter to transmit a message simultaneously with other transmitters to a receiver without the need for retransmission when the message reaches the receiver with sufficient strength over the strengths of the other transmissions. In one embodiment, the network access scheme is applied to a wireless data network, which includes support to a two-way paging application. Another network access scheme combines the high channel utilization of the carrier sensing multi-access (CSMA) protocol with the FM capture effect to provide even higher expected channel utilization. The resulting network access scheme uses a channel access protocol ("CSMA/AT") which provides an adaptive threshold. An RF transmitter determines, using the adaptive threshold, whether or not to transmit its message. Under CSMA/AT, if the sensed power of other transmissions (RSSI) in the channel is below the adaptive threshold, the transmitter transmits; otherwise, the transmitter backs off.

    • An audio interface garment includes systems for attenuating the influence of sound waves generated by audio output devices on output signals from a plurality of input devices an. In one embodiment, input signals which are applied to the audio output devices are combined by a mixer to form a mixed audio signal. A plurality of Widrow-Hoff least mean square adaptive filters each form a corresponding filtered signal based upon the mixed audio signal and the output signal from a corresponding one of the input devices. A plurality of processed signals are formed by differencing each filtered signal from the corresponding output signal. The weight values of the adaptive filters are modified according to the least mean square method. The processed signals provide signals in which the first sound waves are attenuated.

    • A remote terminal for use at an access network node of a network provides a plurality of telecommunications services, the remote terminal providing selected ones of the telecommunications services to at least one corresponding terminal device. The telecommunications services provided by the network include a plain old telephone service (POTS), a an integrated service digital network service (ISDN), and internet services such as xDSL. In one embodiment, the remote terminal comprises: a digital signal processor coupled for communication with the network, the digital signal processor having a plurality of terminal ports; and a plurality of subscriber line interface circuit (SLIC's), each of the SLIC's providing an interface between a corresponding one of the terminal ports and at least one corresponding terminal device, the digital signal processor being configured to provide selected ones of the telecommunications services to corresponding ones of the terminal devices. In another embodiment, the remote terminal comprises: a digital signal processor coupled for communication with the network; a subscriber line interface circuit (SLIC) providing communication between a particular terminal device and the digital signal processor; a memory unit for storing computer readable instructions for execution by the digital signal processor, the instructions for implementing an adaptive telecommunications service process including the steps of: automatically determining a selected one of the telecommunications services required by the particular terminal device, and providing the selected telecommunications service to the particular terminal device.

    • A wearable universal user interface device is provided for interacting with a variety of electronic apparatus. The interface device includes various sensors, such as a temperature sensor, pressure sensor, and a two-dimensional quadrant force sensor. The interface device also includes processing circuitry, a wireless transmitter, and an optional receiver. In the preferred embodiment, the interface device is in the form of a ring adapted to be worn on the finger of a user. The device is operated by the wearer's fingers and thumb. Preferably, the interface device includes an internally mounted pressure sensor and an externally mounted two-dimensional force sensor. The body of the ring itself serves as an omnidirectional loop antenna for transmission and reception of signals. Representative applications of the interface device include use as a wireless computer mouse, a remote controller for a television, stereo, VCR, or the like.
